2012-03-13 Färjestads BK - HV 71 3 - 1 (1-0, 0-1, 2-0) Löfbergs Lila Arena
2012-03-15 HV 71 - Färjestads BK 4 - 3 (0-2, 2-0, 1-1, 1-0) Kinnarps Arena

Skellefteå (2) - Modo (8) 2-1

2012-03-14 Skellefteå AIK - MODO Hockey 2 - 3 (0-0, 1-0, 1-2, 0-1) Skellefteå Kraft Arena

Just as in the NHL the playoffs are played in a best out of seven format and with unlimited overtime, no shootouts.
And just as in the NHL, there are a lot of complaints that the refs let everything go in the playoffs....

Best scorer so far is George Holloway of Skellefteå Aik with 6 points in 3 games (3G 3A).

Jakob Silfverberg, that I mentioned earlier, is going to be a monster of a player.
He has been awarded Guldhjälmen (the golden helmet) as MVP of the regular season 2011/12 and he had two goals last night and assisted on the GWG in overtime. There is now speculation that he might head over to Ottawa this season already, when the Swedish playoffs are done, which would be possible since he has already signed a contract with the Senators and then been lent back to Brynäs. Thus it would not count as a trade or transfer, but just as a callup. The last date to leave the SEL for teh NHL has been passed, but once the SEL season ends, there is nothing preventing him from playing in the NHL, so he'd be ready to go in time for the Stanley Cup playoffs!

Game seven of the Swedish Championship quarter finals is scheduled for March 23rd, of the semi finals for April 7th (same as the NHL regular season) and of the final for April 21st.

Sure, should Brynäs go all the way, he may be too beat and arrive too late for Ottawa to consider it, but otherwise it's certainly a possibility, especially if they suffer injuries and need someone to fill an empty roster space.

Quarter finals are over.
AIK(7) eliminated Luleå(1) in 5! Quite an upset!

Skellefteå(2) eliminated Modo(8) in 6. Nazzy&Foppa bringing in Ulf Samuelsson to coach and having Mikael Tellqvist, Rob Shremp, Niklas Sundström and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen on the roster did not help.

Färjestad(6) eliminated HV71(3) in 6. Another upset, but not of the same magnitude as the 7th seed eliminating the regular season winners.

Brynäs(4) eliminated Frölunda(5) in 6. It's the kids that are doing it! The official third line of Jakob Silfverberg (born 1990), Calle Järnkrook (born 1991) and Sebastian Wennström (born 1991) is pure magic to watch! 8-)
I say "official" third line, because even if they are listed as such, in many games at the end of this season they have had more ice time than the first two lines...

Silfverberg is now leading the playoff scoring with 5 goals and 4 assists in 6 games!

Semifinal matchups:

Skellefteå(2) vs AIK(7)

Brynäs(4) vs Färjestad(6)

I predict a final between Skellefteå and Brynäs, and once there, I'll root for Brynäs youngsters to win a gold before heading to the NHL. Skellefteå may be the better team overall, but I hope the youthful exuberance prevails.

Top five in scoring so far:

Rk Initial + Name (team) GP G A TP (+/-)
1) J Silfverberg (Brynäs) ... 6 5 4 9 (+8)
2) G Holloway (Skellefteå) . 6 4 3 7 (+2)
3) R Wallin (Färjestad)..... 6 3 3 6 (+6)
4) C Järnkrook (Brynäs) .... 6 2 4 6 (+7)
5) M Johansson (Färjestad) 6 0 6 6 (+3)

Halfway through the semifinals Skellefteå and AIK are tied 2-2 whereas Brynäs has a 3-1 lead against Färjestad and will have home court advantage in both game 5 and 7.

I predict a Skellefteå vs Brynäs final, and right now I give Brynäs a slight edge when it comes to winning the championship.

Silfverberg is still leading the scoring with 11 points (7+4) in 9 games.
Lee Goren (Skellefteå) is in a four way tie for seventh place with 8 points in 9 games.

Andreas Dackell has finally hung up the skates after 14 seasons for Brynäs in the SEL and 8 seasons in the NHL for Ottawa/Montreal. He injured his knee before Xmas and only returned for the playoffs, but he has been playing on pain killers and is now giving up. His knee is too messed up and even though he's been getting shots before games, the pain is impeding him from contributing in a meaningful way.

If he is lucky he might still get another championship medal to round off his career.

( he also sponsors what is probably the worst team in any beer league in the world - The Pelican Flyers of the Thai World Hockey Federation - yours truly honorary coach :) ) Been some great games in his bar on his widescreen . Lots of hockey fans here.. Go AIK...and Canucks !!

Yup. They won the regular season and are currently playing relegation games in hope of being promoted to the SEL. Unfortunately for them, Örebro are dead last among thecsix teams competing for two slots in the SEL, so it's not going to happen.

Brynäs beat Färjestad 4-2 last night and are ready for the final for the first time since '99.
Skellefteå beat AIK 8-2 (sic!) and are ahead 3-2 in their semifinal.

With all teams having one game left in the relegation series, it's already decided that Timrå and Rögle get the honour of playing in the SEL next year. Timrå defended the slot they already have, while Rögle (with Rahimi) returned after walking in the desert for a while.

Djurgården, the major Stockholm team, who were in the SEL this season and is a traditional powerhouse having won the Swedish championship 16 times, which is more than any other team (Brynäs is second with 12 titles, Färjestad and IK Göta are tied for third with nine championship titles each), will be demoted to Allsvenskan.

Skellefteå beat AIK in six and the finals start tonight.

Brynäs vs Skellefteå, two skill teams that like to play hockey. Should be good.

Lee Goren, who used to be a force on the Moose and played some 30 games for the Canucks, is one of the better Skellefteå players. He's been doing fairly well for himself in Europe, winning an SEL title with Färjestad in 2009 and then the Swiss championship with Bern in 2010.

Brynäs won the first game of the Swedish final, in Skellefteå, 6-3.

Two goals and one assist for Silfverberg, who is a monster out there. People are starting to compare him to Forsberg.
I think you'll notice him next year when he plays for the Senators, who btw are starting to compete with Vancouver and Detroit for Swedish content... Alfredsson and Karlsson already in place and Zibanejad and Silfverberg about to join.

Game two tonight here in Gävle. I actually think Brynäs may sweep this, but I guess it's too early to say. :|

Excellent summary Per, and interesting read!

As an AIK fan I just had to correct you on this one though:
Skellefteå beat AIK in six and the finals start tonight.
AIK beat Skellefteå in game six in front of probably the most loud fans in the world :-)

Ah well, six or seven... not that it matters that much right now... :-(

... and I have to agree with you about Silfverberg... best player in the SEL at 21. No doubt he's having a long NHL career in front of him.
