Not sure what your trying to do, butt hear is how I set mine up.
I wanted to be able to listen to my TV through my audio system butt I also wanted to be able to listen music through my system while watching TV,
From my PVR, I have a HDMI cable going directly to my TV, this gives me video and TV adio through the TV speakers if I ever want that.
I have an optical cable from my PVR to my receiver, this allows me to listen to the TV audio through my audio system.

I think thats where i have gone wrong. I have a HDMI cable from the TV to the surround but of course the it doesn't pick up the rec'r for whatever reason. I'd imagine those optical cables are cheaper than the HDMI anyways, I'll give it a try - thanks Tops.

What??? You should try hooking your processor up to a computer and tweaking the settings for five hours.CFP! wrote:Topper wrote:Not sure what your trying to do, butt hear is how I set mine up.

Don't use optical unless you're trying to do two things at once like Topper described... Watching tv (Nucks Game) and listening to music at the same time (using a cd player, xbox ect)
I've read the question five times and I'm not sure what the hell your asking? Are you asking the question Topper answered or are you having trouble getting the audio on your surround sound to work at all? If it's the latter go HDMI from sat to receiver and use a second HDMI cable from receiver to display.CFP! wrote:Does anyone know how to hook up my surround sound to my TV so I can listen to surround sound with live TV/radio?

This is where it gets tricky. It really depends on what you have for a receiver. If it's a piece of shit receiver (anything under 800.00) you're likely better off going HDMI direct from sat receiver to display and using a digital audio cable (not optical cable, it looks like an RCA cable) from your satellite box to your receiver for audio. It really depends on the receiver. Some crappy receivers will allow for a simple pass through. If your receiver is crappy but it has this function then you can use two HDMI cables as I described above. Basically you want to avoid using a shit receiver to process your video signal. You're better off going video direct from the source, sat to the display.

All I want to do is use my surround sound while watching TV.
I have tried a few times and thought "Hey, I know of a hardwood thread this would be great in!"

HDMI from sat box to TV sends the picture to your TVCFP! wrote:All I want to do is use my surround sound while watching TV.

Audio cable (as ODB suggested instaed of the optical I suggested, it's just a length of coaxial with RCA connectors) from Sat Box to receiver. Sends the audio to your receiver.
Note on your receiver what input you plugged the audio cable into and set your receiver to that input when you watch TV.

Re: Home Entertainment Discussion
That's it... imposable to screw it up. Just make sure you select the correct inputs on the receiver once it's all hooked up. You may have to assign the digital input to Cbl/Sat on your receiver. It's easy to do if you look at your manual.Topper wrote:HDMI from sat box to TV sends the picture to your TVCFP! wrote:All I want to do is use my surround sound while watching TV.

Also note, you can only use a digital optical cable if you have one on your satellite box. You'll know you have the output if you find an orange RCA input. All RCA inputs are colored. Orange is digital audio. Plug the correct cable into the orange output on the sat and plug it into the orange rca that will be marked digital input on the back of your receiver. If you don’t have an orange output or input on either piece of equipment you'll be forced to use HDMI or a digital optical as Topper originally suggested.

Then again... I'm able to get sound out of my surround SOUND system!
If you can't get sound... open the manual!

Re: Home Entertainment Discussion
So with the upcoming reno to the house, is it worth it to be doing any in-ceiling or in-wall speakers? Or is it worth wiring for them and possibly installing them at a later date when I have a bit more loose change to pay for some higher quality hardware, or is it too much of a pain in the ass to install those kind of speakers after drywall and painting is done?
Still running the same gear, just a newer TV, 2 years old 42" LG LCD, it's nothin special, just upgraded to a 1080p from the 720p Toshiba of the same size that I had before. Toshiba was a plasma though, I miss the plasma, better colours.
First order of business for downstairs is a receiver with HDMI. Hate not having that.
Either way, once it's all said and done I'll be running smaller speakers next time around. I don't want giant towers anymore, but I'm not getting those little Sony all-in-one system things either.

Once had a girlfriend who asked me to leave the seat down. Sure thing I told her, you want the seat left down, I'll always leave the seat down.Strangelove wrote: I pride myself on never looing at manuals and always leaving the toilet seat up.
She didn't have to open the manual to figure out that me leaving the seat up was a better option.

Speaking of Creeper near the end, he was telling me he was gonna launch a major 9-11 inside job conspiracy debate.
He was doing a bunch of research & stuff.
I was SO looking forward to that!
