Hmm, I think I would have done that.
Kubina would have been a nice fit here. a 3rd pairing guy that could move up if/when Salo gets hurt. I dont see a better RHD being available for a second or less.

But yeah the fantasizing has gotten somewot out of control.
You and Toppy had best stay outta this thread.

A package surrounding Raymond could work, so long as Selanne would allow the deal.
Raymond + 1st for Selanne + 2nd?

Of course this team goes where the core takes it, but stating guys like Lappy and Higgins had no real impact on the teams success last year isn't entirely fair. Without them we don't have that success.
I agree with you about the moves Gillis is likely to make, he's not going to drastically change the structure of the team at the deadline. Those are off-season moves, but they still elicit the strongest opinions and reactions from fans and media alike. Which is why those rumours become such a hot topic.
But additional role players that can potentially push this team over the top is what Gillis should be looking for. He found a couple last year and likely has his sites on a few this year. These are the types of guys you get for 2nd and 3rd rounders, and we shouldn't be giving up much more.A couple players like Lappy or Higgins is all we should expect and what we can hope for. Likely one on the back-end and one up front.
I`m confident Gillis can get what he feels is required and without over paying for `rentals`. He proved that last year as neither had no impact and neither were rentals.

Defense
Andrew MacDonald – Islanders – Solid shutdown D - $0.5 mil 1 yr left
Robyn Regehr – Buffalo – Physical shutdown D - $4 mil - 1 yr left
Bryan Allen – Carolina – Physical D with decent mobility – plays a shutdown role - $2.9 mil UFA
Sheldon Souray – Dallas – One huge cannon of a shot. Great on the PP – very physical - $1.6 mil UFA
Toni Lydman – Anaheim – Great skater who plays a sound D $3.0 mil - 1 yr left
Ladislav Smid – Edmonton - Good at defending opposing scorers. - $2.5 mil 1 yr left

I thought that was pretty widely reported afterwards by insiders?

How old was Mats when he received a contract offer from Gillis? Demitra?
Selanne does indeed give this club a more competitive edge than Mason Raymond.
