World Juniors 2012

Post by Per »

Anyone else starting to get anxious for this to start?

The tournament starts on boxing day and ends January 5th.

Group A (Calgary)
Russia
Sweden
Switzerland
Slovakia
Latvia

Group B (Edmonton)
Canada
USA
Finland
Czech Rep
Denmark

I expect Sweden to win Group A, but I hear there are some really talented Russians on this years roster, so we'll have to watch out for them. Sweden is missing Landeskog and Larson who are not let go by their NHL teams. Then again, Canada is missing Nugent-Hopkins and a few others, so... :P
I find it sad that there isn't a rule in place that forces teams to let all the best juniors participate, but I guess it is the way it is. :(

Strange development in recent years is that the Czechs and Slovaks no longer seem to be able to bring truly competitive teams, whereas Switzerland has gradually been starting to catch up with the real hockey nations.

Hoping for a Sweden vs Canada final! 8-)

Maybe they are thinking of using a 1A/1B system?

Canada's first opponent will be Finland. Make sure to look out for Mikael Granlund, who's a spectacular player.
Get a load of this goal that he scored at the 2011 world championship against Russia. And that's Kulikov that he gets by so easily behind the goal cage...

Let's see what he can do when playing against juniors... :drink:

Bit disappointed by the Finns so far. :(
I expected more.

Sure, you can see that Their captain, Granlund, is talented, but all in all they are far too flawed to present a real challenge to the Canadian team. Oh well. Guess the win was inevitable, but I'd have liked the Finns to keep it closer than this.

The Finnish D just seems to be too inexperienced to deal with Canada's depth at forward. Pretty much every line can roll and has had sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Canada's D has stepped up fairly well and haven't given the Fins much to work with.

I kind of expected a 4 or 5 goal differential. Canada should be handily beating these mid-tier Junior countries.

Not much of a game. Once we got the two goals, it was over. Good to see the great passing and some nice goals.

Nine minutes into the game and Sweden is ahead 3-2.

Yup, you heard me right! Five goals in just nine minutes.
This game may well end with basketball style numbers...

USA-Denmark just facing off...

USA 3 Denmark 2 (in the 2nd)

Jensen with a big slapper from the point on the powerplay which is tipped in to tie the game at one (he is #17, there are two Jensens, the other named Jonas.) Interesting that Denmark has him at the point on the powerplay, because in pre-season I thought he looked strong playing along the half boards and coming out from the corner.

Jensen didn't look very good on the PK - was the high man covering both points in a diamond configuration, and just stood with feet together letting 5 or 6 point shots through. Blech. Looked like he expected every shot to go in!

He did have a decent rush as time ran out to create a chance from the slot.

Earlier:

Sure they lost 9-4, but there were some important milestones there for the Latvian juniors...

1) First time they allowed less than ten goals against when playing Sweden at the WJC.
2) First time they scored more than two goals against Sweden at a WJC.

So I guess they can feel pretty good about themselves, eh?

DSP is a huge loss for Canada.

The PK/energy/physical area will suffer.

I really liked his play pre-tourney and in the first game. Hoping to see not quite the drop off as last year when Shwartz went out.
