Sundström's number to be retired

Postby Per » Tue Nov 29, 2011 2:52 pm

Well, maybe not in Vancouver, but Björklöven, the team he represented before and after his ten seasons in the NHL, will honour Patrik in connection to the home game against Teg, by having his jersey hung from the rafters. Probably the greatest player to have been raised in Umeå, even if he never earned a lot of hardware. He was however on the only Swedish team ever to win WJC gold, and he still holds the NHL record for most points scored in a playoff game (8).

Probably as a result of meeting the Björklöven management for the jersey retirement ceremony, Patrik has agreed to help out as assistant coach. Good knows Björklöven needs help; after being demoted for financial problems, they are now in the third tier league and it's essential that they get out of this swamp asap!

True dat. One of the best players to have come out of Sweden, and definitely the best "own product" ever raised by Björklöven. Unfortunately he was never on a team that won anything, apart from the 1981 WJC, but he was named best player of the 1981 WJC, best player of the SEL (Golden Puck) in 1981/82, and best Swedish player in the NHL (Viking Award) in 1983/84 and 1988/89. He also still holds the NHL record for most points in a playoff game:
Most points, one playoff game: Patrik Sundstrom (Apr. 22, 1988) and Mario Lemieux (Apr. 25, 1989), 8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NHL_records_(individual)

He does have a collection of silver medals though:
World Championship '81
SEL '82
Canada Cup '84

Must feel a bit unfair that his twin brother (who was a good player, but not as good as Patrik) apart from the medals Patrik has also has won three SEL golds ('87, '92, '94) and one world championship gold ('87).

I still think the Canucks should have brought Peter over as well, to enjoy Wonder Twin Power in the 80's already...
