I'm with Burke on the appropriateness or lack of on this front. Maybe it's because I lived in the West End for so many years amongst these 'faggots' (oh they do call each other that BTW).
At the same time, I get it, it's in the heat of the moment and things are said that aren't always right. Give the fine of $2500, which is the NHL standard, I believe, and get on with it. Have it noted, and carry on. I'm sure Wayne Simmonds has been called many things racial throughout his hockey career as well.

Isn't Trottier considered one of the gentlemen of the game?

As long as players are going to use homosexual slurs as insults there will be an issue. Feel free to read my post with a lisp. The English language is full of lovely terms that actually qualify as trash talk.Zedlee wrote:What a non-issue. Avery victim of trash talking? My god what next.

Re: pot calling the kettle black
It's 2011. Certain slurs are no longer socially acceptable, nor should they be.
Simmonds was born black, therefore he has no choice in the matter and should not be criticized for it.
Avery was born gay, therefore he has no choice in the matter and should not be criticized for it.
If I were to label the entire Flames fanbase mentally retarded I may be technically speaking the truth, but it would still be inappropriate, insensitive and highly offensive, especially to those who have family members who've suffered the debilitating effects of Fetal Alchohol Syndrome.
It has to stop somewhere.

^^^^Well said Rummy.
Personally I think it’s wrong to call anyone anything.
“GOOD” or “BAD”.
Considering the fact all things ARE relative.
For instance if I were to ‘pump your tires’ by calling you an “evil genius” WELL THEN in a roundabout way one could say I’m actually calling others at this site “goody-two-shoe morons”... by way of comparison. Who knows how many folks would feel hurt and offended IF I were to call you an “evil genius”!!
For example.
