Best War Movie?

Post by Southern_Canuck »

I love a good war movie - so I was wondering about everyone else's favourites...

The well-knowns:

"Saving Private Ryan"
"Three Kings"
"Apocalypse Now"
"The Bridge on the River Kwai"
"Platoon"
"The Deer Hunter"
"The Hurt Locker"
"Black Hawk Down"
"Das Boot"
"Schindler's List"
"Casablanca"

Or, what about:

"Letters from Iwo Jima"
"The Patriot"
"Life is Beautiful"
"The Dirty Dozen"
"Kelly's Heroes"
"The Great Escape"
"M.A.S.H."
"The Thin Red Line"
"Good Morning Vietnam"
"Glory"
"Zulu"
"Gallipoli"
"Full Metal Jacket"
"Jarhead"
"Cross of Iron"
"Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo"
"Tora! Tora! Tora!
"Henry V"

The little knowns:

"The Dam Busters" - the development of the bouncing bomb in World War II
"The Rough Riders" - The Spanish-American War, including the assault on a heavily defended San Juan Hill.
"84 Charlie Mopic" - shot in first person, this is a riveting portrayal of a patrol in the Vietnam War. Because of the camerawork, you are basically in the film!

I've seen most, but not all, of these - does anyone have any other recommendations?

I'd put Braveheart on that list of must watch.

As well as Gladiator.

And Toppers fav, All quiet on the Western Front.

Paths of Glory is one you might want to check out - an early Kubrick flick.

The Great Escape
The Big Red One
Papillon- not a true war movie in the sense- a bit more like Escape from Alcatraz but i'm a big Mcqueen honk
Rescue Dawn
The Kingdom
The Dirty Dozen

Good topic SC, someone should start a best Comedy and best Western thread as well.

I should throw in the Pat Tillman story as well. What a fucking tragedy of a movie. Loved that kid as a player with the Sun Devils and the Cardinals before he joined the Army.

Solid thread SC.

Casablanca is one of my top fav's as its just a classic.

While its not a movie, I thought I'd include Generation Kill as a terrific must see war mini-series.

Ah hell, while we're at it. I might as well add Red Dawn as the worst war movie ever. :P

Better than The Breakfast Club? Where a wealthy young Molly Ringwald is forced to go to war with her own misconceptions concerning the social constructs of division within economic class strata?

I don't fuckin' think so.
As well as Gladiator.
He said war movie. War.
And Toppers fav, All quiet on the Western Front.
Perhaps the best war novel I have ever read. Even a notch above Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls.

If anyone wants to read a sick Vietnam war/aftermath book, check out Sympathy For the Devil by Kent Anderson, who was a Special Forces Sergeant over there. It is little known but straight up badass and there's a sequel as well.

The Deer Hunter has to be one of the worst war movies. There's 4 or however the many fucking hours of my life I'd like back.

I'm with Dirty... Band of Brothers all the way. The Pacific is great too, but a lot darker than BoB. HBO just does good stuff.

Seconded. FWTBT is one of my favorite books, but All Quiet is a monster.

After watching BoB probably five or six times I was stoked for The Pacific. While it was good around episode 4/5 the rest was more fluff and not nearly as much action as BoB was IMO. I was left expecting more action.

I'm glad Enemy @ the gates was mentioned. Much better than Behind enemy lines.
