From Bountiful to Ponoka

Well, since I'm a Flames fan on these boards, I guess I'll start the "meanwhile over in bountiful..." thread over here. New location - new name.

Nothing much happening on the Flames front at this point. I'm expecting Feaster to make a few more moves. The Flames D at this point isn't going to scare any opposing teams. They are moving in the right direction by going with a much more mobile D. They still have Sarich to do some hitting, although he's slow and won't be able to log the minutes that Regehr did. Babchuk is great for the Flames power play, but not exactly the speediest guy. Other than that, the Flames D is certainly going to be fast enough, but they scare the hell out of me.

You know so much will again depend upon Kipper. If he has another good year the Flames will make some noise and may make the playoffs. They had a good finish last season, well better than their start. It will be interesting to see if they come fast out of the gate. But ya, their defence is very suspect. Time for J'Bow to step up and earn his contract.

To be perfectly honest, the Calgary Flames don't mean anything to me any more. This however, will change if/when the Flames proves themselves of being a worthy rival again. I don't even dislike their team. I only dislike their popcorn fart of a fanbase in Calpuck.....a site that has become even more arrogant since 2005/06 despite their team's steady and gradual decline since then. Truly amazing.

For now though - I would much rather see a "Meanwhile, in Beantown" or "Meanwhile, in the Windy city" type thread.

Love them or hate them, the Bruins and Blackhawks are atleast worthy and respectable rivals of the Canucks.....and are worthy of our attention.

I suspect that the LA Kings will soon grab the attention of the Canucks' as well. San Jose, Detroit, Nashville, Phoenix, etc., are ALL ahead of the Flames, and will most likely pose a greater threat.

Anyway - this is just my opinion. I love the banter that goes on between our site and Calgarypuck's site, but I honest to god do not care that much about the Flames right now. They have to earn our respect as far as I'm concerned. I wish them the best of luck and will once again pay attention to them when they are deserving of it.

Right now, it isn't much of a rivalry, but things change over time. I was a fan from the beginning. They started off well and in just 8 years after moving to Calgary, they won a cup. Then came the dark ages with 7 years of no playoffs - the time when I really enjoyed Calpuck. Then Sutter comes along and turns the team around, to the point where they almost won their 2nd cup. It was a gradual down hill from there, to where they are today - not quite rock bottom, but certainly nothing to write home about.

I agree with what you say about the rivalry being dead between the Canucks and the Flames. It's kind of the way I felt about Oilers for that past number of years. The Oilers are on their way up now. They need to improve their D, and they could be making some noise this year.

Oh well, I'm a hockey fan first and formost, so I'll enjoy the game in spite of my team's struggles.

Waa? The Flames D mobile enough? I don't think so. 2 of the Flames top 6 in Sarich and Babchuk are slow. Bouwmeester is fast but he is a lot softer than I thought be was. Peca was right on the money. 7 million for Bouwmeester. Ugh.

Giordano has wheels and is probably the Flames best Dman when factoring in his cap hit.

I think the Flames D, minus Regehr, has taken a step back.

How the Flames do this year depends on how Kipper and Iginla go. If Iginla decides to miss the first 20 games of the season again, like he did last season, the Flames will have little chance to make the playoffs. If he plays like he did for the last 60 games and Kipper plays lights out, the Flames are a 7-8th seed. Unless those happen, they are likely going to finish in the 10th-12th spot.

Silly season is not over yet but right now it looks like Kipper better be ready to face alot of shots. Unless Feaster can move some salary there is not much space to bring anybody in. I have not looked at what the Flames have in the AHL(maybe you have) but YIKES Kipper better stop smoking cuz it's looking like a busy season.

The lineup with the lack of good D reminds me of the days of Cloutier when all we hoped for was to score more than we let in. I know Kipper is better by a large margin but will Butter have to play him 70 games hoping to make it in. You would hope Karlsson can handle at least 20 games. I will put my let's say dislike for the Flames aside but it is not looking good for the team to make the playoffs.

Ponoka seems like a good description for that place after last year. I had to stop visiting during the playoffs last year when their complaints about diving went so far overboard that a poster actually got upset about a Sedin deliberately passing the puck toward the Sharks bench during a line change to get a Too Many Men call. According to him, that was a "technical dive". I thought it was a good place to stop: Could it get any better for hilarity or any worse for rational thinking?

As a bonus, a Flames fan started the thread so the CPers can't blame a Canucks fan.

The first time I heard that guy's voice I thought it was a joke. I was watching "some kind of" CHL game, and the sound of Loubardias' voice made my jaw drop and my ears curl. How could somebody with that horrible of a voice have a job in broadcasting??

Sorry, I should have clarified what I meant by a more mobile D. What I meant was that the Flames 3rd pairing is going to be a lot more mobile than in previous years. Butler should make it, and maybe Brodie. Both are very fast, and instantly make the flames D group much more mobile. That being said, I don't think this is a great Defence. I agree with your posts, they are in trouble and I don't have any misconceptions of where this team is in terms of competitiveness. Anyway, I guess the point is, Feaster has more or less started down the long road to re-building (at least I think he has).

Anyway, about Calpuck. I am a long time poster over there, although not very frequently these days. I guess this thread is devoted to pointing out some of the crap that goes on there. When I'm over there, I tend to steer clear of that sort of thread. In Calpucks defence, it's a good place to get news, updates, etc.

Many long time Canuck fans (on here, and from the place formerly known as 'Canuckscentral') also followed the Canucks through thick and thin.....whether it was during the dark era of the Messier era, the rise and fall of the WCE, or the brief 2 year transitional "no offense" period...before the mighty Mike Gillis took over.

I feel obliged to say something once again about Calgarypuck.com since I visited there a few days ago and saw a lot of their threads from this past month.....many of their threads, unsurprisingly, that were "anti-Canuck" in nature.

I find it interesting how that whole message board can pretty much live vicariously through another non-Calgary team (in this case, the Boston Bruins). I don't recall Canuck fans living vicariously through Tampa in 04'....or Carolina in 06'.

While most posters at oilfans.com, penaltybox.com (Leafs), etc., etc. were all away during their off-season (since their teams had been eliminated), there were the Calpuck fans......all cheering on and living vicariously through the Bruins.....not because they were fans, but because they were playing against the Canucks......and were feeling deeply insecure (scared/petrified?) over the idea of the Canucks winning the cup?.....and in effect, somehow "upstaging" the city of Calgary due to our Geographical proximity.

Calpuck never ceases to amaze me. Never seen so many people have such a strong contempt towards one specific team....out of jealousy.

I blame it on the '04 run. Prior to that, Calpuck was a great place. Then, they go on a run, the red mile happens, etc., and there is a whole wave of new fans and posters on Calpuck. Unfortunately, they not only outnumbered a lot of the long time posters, but many of the good posters left. Now, it is what it is. Oh, and the hate thing - honestly, I don't know any Flames fans that hate the Canucks as much as some of the posters over at CP. I have lots of friends that are Flames fans, Canuck fans (most of my family are Canuck fans), and Oiler fans. I certainly don't hear any of them loathing the Canucks like SOME of the posters at CP. So, I think a thread here, to mock those posters, is appropriate - especially from a Flames fan that just doesn't get that hate. God I like the drinking smily

I will just add that Calpuke is a place where men are men and the sheep are scared. I don't go to a lot of sites and I used to visit CalPuck when it was run properly, then Bingo decided volume was better than quality and the place went down hill from there. How they allow the poster post crap like they do is beyond me.

They actually have the audacity to think they are good posters when they put down others especially anything Vancouver.

I would like them to finish #9 and #10 for the next few years while Iginla and Krisspy Cream get older and then retire without being traded. Well actually I like Iginla so maybe trade him for prospects so Iginla can at least have chance to win the cup.

They trash other fanbases particularly the Oilers for overrating their prospects - and then there are people there saying that Max Reinhart is going to be the next Doug Gilmour or something like that.
