GOODBYE PHOENIX?
HOPEFULLY THE CANUCKS TOOK THEIR GOLF CLUBS ON THIS ROAD TRIP…BECAUSE IT’S GOING TO BE A VERY LONG TIME BEFORE THEY SEE PHOENIX AGAIN…
IT NOW LOOKS CERTAIN THAT THE COYOTES ARE HEADED BACK TO WINNIPEG…
TODAY THE CITY OF GLENDALE FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE GOLDWATER INSTITUTE….
THE CITY CLAIMS THE INSTITUTE INTERFERED WITH ITS SALE OF BONDS TO HELP FUND THE SALE OF THE TEAM…
GLENDALE IS LOOKING FOR MORE THAN HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES…
THOSE ESTIMATES ARE…TO SAY THE LEAST…COMICAL…
THESE ARE THE ONLY NUMBERS THAT REALLY MATTER…
LAST YEAR THE COYOTES LOST $30 MILLION…THIS YEAR THEY ARE EXPECTED TO LOSE $40 MILLION…
THIS FROM A FRANCHISE THAT MADE THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR…AND IS A GOOD BET TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN THIS SEASON…
THERE IS NO GOOD ARGUMENT TO KEEP THE TEAM IN GLENDALE…
ONLY A PATHETIC ATTEMPT…BY LOCAL POLITCIANS…TO THROW GOOD TAX MONEY…AFTER BAD…
SOMETHING VANCOUVER TAX PAYERS UNDERSTAND…ALL TOO WELL…
RIGHT NOW THERE IS ONLY ONE REAL OPTION…WINNIPEG…
LAST YEAR CANADIAN BILLIONAIRE DAVID THOMSON… PUT A $170 MILLION ON THE TABLE AND WORD HAS IT…THE OFFER STILL STANDS…
THE DEAL WOULD PAY BACK MOST OF WHAT THE LEAGUE HAS ALREADY WASTED…
AND MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY TO THE OWNERS…IT WOULD FINALLY…STOP THE BLEEDING…
BUT THE MUCH BIGGER THE QUESTION IS…WHETHER OR NOT WINNIPEG IS AN NHL CITY…
THE NHL ESTIMATES REVENUE…OF ONLY $70 MILLION A SEASON…
THAT’S TWICE WHAT THE COYOTES GENERATE…
BUT IT WOULD STILL MAKE THE TEAM…THE LOWEST REVENUE GENERATING FRANCHISE IN CANADA…
UNFORTUNATELY THE COYOTES ARE ONLY “THE TIP” OF THE “RELOCATION ICEBERG”…
UP NEXT IS ATLANTA…THEN FLORIDA…THEN NASHVILLE…AND THEN THE ISLANDERS…
THE OPTIONS NOW INCLUDE…QUEBEC CITY…SEATTLE…HOUSTON AND KANSAS CITY…
NONE OF WHICH ARE IDEAL…
IN THE END…ALL OF THE BLAME…WILL LAND AT THE FEET OF COMMISSIONER GARY BETTMAN…
BECAUSE IT WAS BETTMAN WHO MOVED THE NHL INTO THE SUN BELT…
IN THE END…IT MAYBE TURN OUT TO BE…THE MOST EXPENSIVE GOLF TRIP OF ALL TIME

Re: GOODBYE PHOENIX?
as much as the ALL CAPS bugs me....and that this is a word for word copy of Pratts Rant on Pratt and Taylor on the TEAM1040 today (was listening on the drive home from work), I feel that it's a step in the right direction for the NHL. Even though I've heard a rumor that the team may not even be called the Jets again, which they should be, it's a good hockey and sports market......small, yes....but loyal. I hope to see the Canucks play the Jets next season. But I do wonder how the divisions and conferences would look.

I am not sure if this mess will ever end? Any smart business man would of moved this team to Winnipeg a long time ago. But this mess continues, will it ever end?

any SMART buisness man would have sold the team to a billionaire buisnessman and let them move the team to hamilton years ago... thats why Gary aint smart, nor is he a buisnessman.

Well he WORKS for businessmen, and given their bankroll, some of them must be pretty smart. Balsille tugged on heartstrings and patriotism, but it's always about the cash.Madcombinepilot wrote:Jovorock wrote:Any smart business man would of moved this team to Winnipeg a long time ago. The problems with Hamilton are well documented. Much of Buffalo's viewership comes from Southern Ontario. A team that was just sold to a very rich man committed to making them work in that city. Are you going to cut the legs out of one franchise to relocate another. Forget the matter that the Billionaire stood to more than double the value of his investment almost overnight? hmmmmmm.... "Hey Jim, you want a team in Hamilton? Okay, you need to pay us XX for the Coyotes, pay XX to Buffalo for killing them, and pay the rest of us owners 500M. Done deal."
As far as Winnipeg goes, given the funds behind the ownership group, they would be most certainly a stable franchise for the foreseeable future. I'm still not convinced that Winnipeg has the corporate sponsors required to make an NHL team work. Further, how do you make that team successful? How many stud players are going to want to go play in Manitoba? Making millions in complete anonymity in Phoenix is one thing, making millions in a blizzard-swept tundra where the city lives and breathes Jets? Edmonton is quickly replaced as the least-favorite destination in pro hockey.

Re: GOODBYE PHOENIX?
I also heard a rumor that if they Coyotes went to W'Peg, the NW would be re-aligned with Calgary, Edmonton, 'Peg, and Vancouver in the same division... sucks when 2 canadian teams don't make the playoffs just because 4 teams are in the same division...
Nice rivalries though....
My glass is half full on this one...

Someone should create a browser plugin/add-on that automatically converts all caps to something easier on the eyes.

I suspect this is a copy of his on air script, which for ease of reading is done in the capitals. He just drags and copies it to this site
cheers
Re: GOODBYE PHOENIX?
I, for one, would be sure to attend a Winnipeg NHL game every time I went home to visit, and buy tickets for my whole family there -- because it'll be cheaper than games in Vancouver, that's for sure.
Predicted name? Winnipeg Falcons.

Re: GOODBYE PHOENIX?
Well, I'd prefer the Jets myself.
But, there is some good history there; Canada's first ever Ice Hockey Olympic Gold: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg_Falcons. Still, the Jets were the winning-most team of Avco Cups.

Re: GOODBYE PHOENIX?
I too would prefer the Jets.
The only other choices from the past would be the Victorias or the Monarchs....but neither of them sound very "marketable".
Mosquitoes or Blizzard would work
