Any love for Levon Helm?

Any love for Levon Helm?

Post by Chef Boi RD »

Levon Helm of the Band is dying of Cancer, very sad. Such a massively influential band

The Night They Drove old Dixy Down - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOi0tC00 ... re=related

Helluva talent, awesome voice

Soon to be at the Helm of a Manuel.

Don't forget Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt.

<ahem>At risk of opening myself to great ridicule... I play "The Band" on a nice thick chunk of vinyl that I picked up new a couple years ago. Sounds great. In addition to the songs mentioned, I've been digging Rag Mama Rag off that album.

Agreed, good stuff. Has anyone heard Helm's new stuff? I thought he put out some recent material.

Disclaimer: It cost me less than $100 to pick up an old Dual table and replace the cartridge. The nostalgic power of spinning records is awesome ;)

Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt are his two latest discs, both are exceptional.

RIP Levon.

Last Waltz is still one of the best (if not the best) concert films made. Great work.

Agree with you there

A sad day in music. A Legend.

One of the best voices in rock history.

My wife is a huge fan of the Band and I think she felt a loss over this death. That is kind of special because how many people you have never met would you mourn? I liked his voice and I can remember sitting in awful places and hearing 'the weight' and being lifted by its power.

The Band changed the way Rock and Roll was played. No solos to speak of with the exception of Hudson's intro to Chest Fever and the use of less structured rythms that turned their beat on a dime.

I have always enjoyed them but did not have the passion I had for the Velvet Underground or Springsteen in the early years and I am sure someone will know who backed up Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto in 1970 at the Nickleodeon on Yonge Street. I can still see Hawkins with his cowboy hat but am not aware when the boys from Ontario stopped being his backup. I suspect it was earlier but if someone knows I would appreciate the info.

R.I.P. Levon Helm

Lots of great memories to The Band's tunes.

As has been mentioned, The Last Waltz, one of my favourite music documentaries.

Take a load off Levon...

They used to do a double bill at the Ridge Theatre back in the '80's. Last Waltz followed by Quadrophenia.

Awesome.

Happy 420 day indeed....

I went to the Ridge a few times when I was younger, some good times.

And yes, after work today, I'll be lighting one up and I'll throw on the Last Waltz. The wife and daughter are gone for the weekend, so that means the entertainment room will be hot boxed.
