hey im not so homesick now, Vancouver has got no worries about black eyes over the Stanley cup riot compared to whats been going on around here the last three days.
It started over the shooting of the innocent crack dealer, but quickly escalated beyond that. waves of teenager have been ransacking whole neighbourhoods, destroying shops and property at will. The cops were caught with their pants down having only 3000 officers on the streets of a city with 8 million people. while they were busy trying to quell the riot in north london, kids in other parts of the city took advantage and ransacked businesses all over town.
90 percent of it were opportunists looking to cash in, but there is a deeper issue here where kids of racial minorities have zero upward mobility, there are no jobs, school is out of the question and no real future beyond selling weed in the parks. The best they can hope for is to rise up in a gang before they get shot or arrested. There is a sense of anger and disillusionment that they never will be apart of the dream of a better life, and at the same time they are hounded by the police at every turn.
The cops don't have limitations here like in Canada or the US who both have charters of rights The police don't need probable cause to stop and search and use they their power to harass and intimidate, and it always seems to be kids in general and black kids in particular who are the targets of the police.
now the only thing missing is a Stanley cup loss ....
