Media storeys that make you go - WTF

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Media storeys that make you go - WTF

Post by sagebrush »

A Swedish man was arrested after he tried to build a nuclear reactor in his kitchen and documented his efforts on the Internet.

Richard Handl, 31, from Angelholm in southern Sweden, gathered materials including smoke detectors, clock and watch hands and via purchases on the Internet.
"I was just curious to see if it was possible, it is just a hobby," said Handl, currently unemployed but previously a worker in a ventilation systems factory.
He documented his efforts on a blog and his Facebook page.
He got as far as mixing some ingredients on a cooker -- americum, radium, beryllium and 96 percent sulphuric acid.
"The boiling explosion was about 3 or 4 months ago and the police came two weeks ago," he said.
After the incident, which he tagged "The Meltdown" on his blog, he said he "cleaned up the mess on the cooker and then I bought some more radium and continued the experiment."
The Radiation Safety Authority said in a statement the authorities raided Handl's flat on July 20 after hearing that he was handling nuclear materials in an unsafe way.
"There were no raised levels of radiation in the apartment and the neighbors were not exposed to radiation," research chief Leif Moberg said in the statement.
Handl reported the raid laconically on his website, writing "Project canceled!"
He was detained and shortly after freed. "I am still a suspect for crime against the radiation safety law," he said.
Less Canucks embarrassment please.

Police in Idaho Falls have told a 34-year-old man to stop wearing his bunny suit in public because it was annoying his neighbors and frightening their children.

A police report says officers responded Monday after a resident reported her son had been frightened by William Falkingham wearing a black bunny costume and hiding behind a tree pointing his finger at the boy like it was a gun.

The officer spoke with other neighbors, who were also disturbed by Falkingham wearing the bunny suit. They also reported he occasionally wears a tutu with the costume.

The report says Falkingham told officers he enjoys wearing the suit, but understood his neighbors' concerns.
Less Canucks embarrassment please.

For the record, I have never been to, or indeed anywhere near, Idaho Falls. This may be a distant relative.

Driving test fraudsters jailed for 'ridiculously unsophisticated' scam
Two bungling drivers have been jailed for hatching a "ridiculously unsophisticated" plot to get one of them a licence.

Hadi Mohammed, 28, a former Iraqi police officer, had failed his test five times and his friend, Derbas Hamed, a qualified driver, agreed to step in and take the examination for him.

Eyebrows were raised when Hamed, 25, was spotted driving up to the test centre in Gloucester alone. Hamed pretended to be Mohammed and took the test but failed in "spectacular fashion", making 16 mistakes, Gloucester crown court heard. Staff were suspicious and called the police.
Now that just feeds so many racial stereotypes, it goes from funny to not funny to hilarious again...

Zimbabwean bus driver offers free ride to people, then delivers them to mental hospital.

The unidentified bus driver was transporting 20 mental patients from the capital city of Harare to Bulawayo Mental Hospital when he decided to stop for a few drinks at an illegal roadside liquor store. Upon his return he was shocked to discovered that all the mental patients have escaped.

Desperate for a solution, the driver stopped at the next bus stop and offered free bus rides. 20 people got on and then he delivered them to the mental hospital and informed the staff they were easily excitable. It took the medical personnel three days to uncover the foul play.

The real mental patients are still at large.

The conspiracy thread might explain how the patients went missing, and, what they are doing now. :P

The Zimbabwean bus storey has been around a bit, but it's one of my favourites.

Woman Dies At Her Own Funeral: Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov Dead At 49
A woman has reportedly died from the shock of coming to life at her own funeral.

Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov, 49, was wrongly declared dead by doctors, but she actually died after hearing people pray for her soul in Kazan, Russia, according to the Daily Mail.
Lessons to be taken from this:

* A closed-casket funeral may have prevented the tragedy.

* If you wake up at your own funeral, try to stay calm and ask for a very stiff drink.

* If you're at a funeral and the guest of honour decides to get up and go for a stroll, try to stay calm... and have two stiff drinks handy.

Philippines singing sensation, Charice Pempengco lashed out at the rumor mongers Wednesday for unsubstantiated claims of membership with the secret society, the Illuminati.

In response to the rumors, the 19-year-old tweeted today, “What's up with these news and people saying about Illuminati?! Again, I am NOT part of it. So just please, get a life and grow up. Thank you”

The rumors seem to all point to “Pyramid”. “Pyramid” is a single she released last year and people have linked the song, a hand gesture (see photo), the singer and the New World Order organization.

According to a Manila Bulletin report, some people have thought this hand gesture to represent the “All-Seeing Eye,” one of the symbols of Illuminati that depict a pyramid with an eye on its illuminated floating tip

Wikipedia describes the Illuminati as a purported conspiratorial organization which acts as a shadowy "power behind the throne", allegedly controlling world affairs through present day governments and corporations, usually as a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati. In this context, the Illuminati are believed to be the masterminds behind events that will lead to the establishment of a New World Order.
Hmmm... the lady doth protest too much, methinks.

US government finds nuclear sludge candy to be unsafe.

The U.S. government says candy imported from Pakistan called Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge is not safe to eat. Who would have guessed?

The Food and Drug Administration announced that the U.S. distributor of Nuclear Sludge chew bars is recalling the candy because of lead contamination. No one has been sickened, but the FDA said elevated lead content could be harmful to small children, infants and pregnant women.
