FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar
With both Canada and Sweden having a good shot at qualifying, and some important qualification games coming up, I figured we could nead a thread for this.
Canada still leading the Concacaf qualification, three points ahead of USA and Mexico, despite the surprise loss to Costa Rica. Games against Jamaica (at home on March 27th) and Panama (away on March 30th) remain. I can't see you guys missing this.
Sweden beat the Czechs 1-0 last night in an elimination game and now face Poland in a game on Tuesday, where the winner qualifies.
Tough road game, but I think we have a decent chance.
In other news, Italy was eliminated last night by North Macedonia....
2 million people - can you even find it on the map?
This means Italy misses the world cup for the second consecutive time. In 2018 they were eliminated in the qualifications by Sweden!

209 nations have participated in the qualifications. Only 32 will make it to the final dance.
By now 19 teams have qualified:
Argentina
Belgium
Brazil
Croatia
Denmark
Ecuador
England
France
Germany
Iran
Japan
Korea
the Netherlands
Qatar (hosts)
Saudi Arabia
Serbia
Spain
Switzerland
Uruguay
There will be three more from Europe. Portugal and North Macedonia will fight it out over one slot, Sweden and Poland over another one and Wales will face the winner of Scotland vs Ukraine for the last one. For some reason Scotland vs Ukraine has been postponed.
Africa has 5 slots, Asia (including Australia) 4.5, Concacaf 3.5, Europe 13, Oceania 0.5 and South America 4.5.
The host nation is not included in this as they qualify automatically.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar
Thanks for this thread.
Not a huge footy fan, but World Cups are always great for the high-quality football soccer and the um, female fans. Euros are probably my second favorite tourney.
Canada should qualify, great to see this nation finally become competitive on the world stage and actually look like they belong. They certainly didn't sneak to the top in qualifying, they dominated the CONCACAF powers.
Great to see the Roman diving team miss again

I used to follow it more 'back in the day', but I'm happy to see Canada with a very good shot to qualify. Combined with a good chance I'll be in Qatar during the WC, and it's a double bonus.
I went to a 1990 WC game in Genoa, Italy (Scotland / Sweden) - then another in 1994 (Brazil / US on July 4). Two of my greatest sporting event memories.

You're going to Qatar for holidays? Nice.
Thank goodness some smarter people decided to hold the WC in November rather than have everybody die of the heat.

They have bars there, and I have no plans to 'spark a chonger'Cousin Strawberry wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 11:47 am Right up til you snap a cold one or spark a chonger.
In Genoa back in 1990, they banned all alcohol sales in the city for the day. The Scots were (Doyle-level) enraged!

Obviously, the Corn Sheik is one of the elites and would have no trouble having a few pops or perhaps even sparking one up if he wanted to.

Imagine a Scottish hooligan not being able to find a drink ANYWHERE before a big match. Add in an immense police / military presence, and it made for some interesting scenes. If anyone got even slightly out of hand, there would be 20 uniforms on them in an instance, a truck would pull up, and they'd be gone. It would be over in 30 seconds. Crazy! After the game, the train station looked like war had broken out - military, guns drawn, no smiles.
Side note: the new stadium they had just built still had 'holes in the floor' where you'd expect to find toilets or urinals.
