Oops-a daisy!
Trump's hidden agenda is beginning to show!
Remember how he complained about immigrants from shithole countries and wondered why the US couldn't have more immigrants from Norway instead?
Scroll forward...
Next thing you know, he starts rambling about tariffs on steel and aluminium.
Eventhough most people assume these are basically aimed at China, China accounts for less than 3% of US steel imports(1), so the main blow would be felt mainly by countries like Canada, Brazil and Mexico, and to some extent Europe.
Never mind that the only reason he can impose tariffs without going through congress is because he is citing national security.
We all know what a lethal threat to the USA those pesky Canadians are.
Scroll forward...
So, sensible republicans start twisting his arms and what do you know; the tariffs will not apply within Nafta. Then most South American nations also get a pass. Then South Korea gets an exemption. Then the EU is also excluded.
So what do we have: A set of unreasonable punitive tariffs aimed at Norway!(2)
Now Norway is not a giant in steel production, but they rank 7th in the world when it comes to aluminium, despite having a population of just 5 million. They actually produce 50% more aluminium than the 300 million+ USA and roughly 40% of what Canada does.
It's their second most important export after petroleum products.
It suddenly becomes obvious. Trump wants more Norwegian immigrants.
How do you achieve this? By crushing the Norwegian economy!
The man is smarter than we think.....
(1)Main exporters of Steel to the USA:
1. Canada 16.7 percent
2. Brazil 13.2 percent
3. South Korea 9.7 percent
4. Mexico 9.4 percent
5. Russia 8.1 percent
6. Turkey 5.6 percent
7. Japan 4.9 percent
8. Germany 3.7 percent
9. Taiwan 3.2 percent
10. China 2.9 percent
(2) ... well, and Russia, Japan and Turkey. But at least when it comes to Russia and Turkey, the talk about national security might hold at least some amount of water...

And once again it sounds as if he is preparing for war with Canada.
He loves the Russians, and Kim Jong Un, but he sure hates you guys*.
* well, and come to think of it, most other western democracies as well...

Yep, all huff and puff.
Really trying to derail everything, he is playing a game with his country and their allies. Coming November the Democrats will most likely take over the senate and congress (or who ever they vote for in November). Word is on the street is that by January he will be impeached.

Re: The War on Canada
I didn't realise that inside knowledge of the Mueller investigation has filtered down to street level.
Re: The War on Canada
It's kind of sad though. It has been a bipartisan effort for the USA to build the current world order. Democrats and Republicans may have differed on the details, but the broad outlines of US foreign policy have been maintained since WW2. Build alliances. Spread democracy and western ideals. Promote free trade.
This guy is like a bull in a china shop. He is tearing it all down, and the worst thing is - I don't even think he knows what he is doing or why!
"I think Russia should also be at the table"
Yeah, well, does he know why they're not?
They invaded Ukraine and stole part of their territory!
That's why the US, the EU andmost every one else imposed sanctions on them and why they have been given a time out from the G7 (or G8, when they were part of it).
The premises have been made clear; as soon as they withdraw from Crimea sanctions will be lifted and they can once again participate in the G8 meetings.
Have they withdrawn? No.
So the idea of inviting them back is just kissing Putin's ass and saying he can do what he wants and we won't complain.

Re: The War on Canada
Trump has no idea what he is doing.
Or he is a mastermind doing so much that no one can keep track of everything. US would not need such a big navy if they didn’t stick their nose into everyone’s business all the time.

Re: The War on Canada
Sorry Reef, what are you saying?
Let Russia have the biggest navy. Or China ?
Gees, man. If anyone, ANYONE, thinks this world's present human race has evolved enough to toss out, throw away, discard, chuck-it, remove it and go without a balance of power, then, um, well words just can't describe it.

Both countries need to smarten up. That's a big ass border we share.
The US and Canada should have a total free trade agreement which was what was proposed many years ago.
That one did not include Mexico and though it may seem harsh, I agreed with that.
There was actually a time not all that long ago, they were considering opening the borders, I kid you not.
I have seen bad times too. There was a period of time when any car on I-5, south of Bellingham with BC plates might be shot at.
If it were a semi loaded with lumber, for sure.
Think it was around 89/90 and it was brought on because Oregon's lumber industry was almost at a standstill on account of the "protected"
Spotted Owl.

Re: The War on Canada
I want cheap chesse ffs! We pay waaaaaaay more than anywhere else in this world for fuckin cheese. Why???
Every summer the inlaws bring me a suitcase full of hushålls cheese from sweden. Its comes in 2 kg wheels of something similar to edam cheese and costs about $8 bucks a kg. Here that costs at least double.
When i lived in Australia we also got huge bricks of awesome sharp cheddar for under 8 bucks a kg.
If trudumb can fuck up enough so cheese gets cheaper combined with corner stores full of grass I'll be happy with this era in canadian political history
