Agree with part of that Top, but watching the WJ and you can see that skating is a big part of it.

As well as PK and role players.

After seeing the Slovaks trap up the neutral zone and clog up the middle of their own zone in the CAN-SLO game, I've come to realize that the bigger ice doesn't deteriorate the effectiveness of the trap; it just slows the game down. Give me NA ice surfaces any day.

A little bit surprised about these picks. Martin's been out with a broken leg since November and won't be back til later this month. Orpik just got back from having his brain rattled by Thornton. Thought Keith Yandle (3rd in US d-man scoring this year) would be there.

I get Wheeler is having a good season, but Bobby Ryan is having a better one (5th of US forwards). Very much a lunch-bucket team, so I think they could have used Ryan's natural scoring ability.

I don't expect the Americans to make much noise this year if Quick isn't back and healthy. Backes, Brown, JVR, Callahan, and Pacioretty, will likely be in penalty trouble a lot, either for being too aggressive or not being quick enough on their feet on the big ice. The defense isn't exactly intimidating anyone.

Howard over Schneider is almost hilarious, so is Miller really.

Compared to 2010 this is a bit more of a lunch bucket team and will have to play as such, unfortunately international hockey seems to prefer speed and skill, particularly on international ice.

Interesting read from Scott Burnside, though too long for some of the posters here.

It explains many of the questions being asked by the talking heads looking at the lineup.

Ryan - poor attitude and one dimensional
Yandle - one dimensional
Kesler - prior to the season, on the fringe due to injuries
Schneider - sharing time in NJ he didn't have the body of work to make a decision on.

Also some interesting takes on how verious GM's see the game through the players they like and why. Burke values well rounded mediocrity.

I was thinking that while reading the Burnside article. Especially as Burnside quote's Burke's bad mouthing of Ryan and saying he wanted to draft Jack Johnson but his scouts wanted Bobby Ryan and he relented to his scouts, adding he still regrets the decision.

Apparently Burke has been trying to call Bobby Ryan since the story broke. Maybe Bobby is consulting his lawyer.

Bobby Ryan might be disappointed he’s not going to Sochi.

He’s even more upset with comments on ESPN.com by Calgary president Brian Burke from the Team USA meetings that indicate the Senators winger isn’t going because he doesn’t have enough “intensity” in his game.

Reacting for the first time since being snubbed Wednesday, Ryan told a throng of reporters Thursday at the Canadian Tire Centre he didn’t like what Burke had to say in the comments that were revealed to a reporter who was given all access by USA Hockey.

At one point he referred to the comments as "gutless."

I hope Bobby Ryan has a good lawyer.

Interesting note on Schneider when you consider that it was between him and Howard for the 3rd spot. Howard has been a very up and down goaltender and has played behind one of the leagues most successful teams in the last 20 years. A good chunk of the losses that Detroit has suffered can actually be laid at Howard's feet. Schneider hasn't had the opportunity to start, but he all but stole the starting job from one of the NHL's best, and has put up good numbers behind one of the most depleted teams in the NHL.

Reading Burke's reasoning and approach to this was somewhat surprising initially when his track record as a NHL GM is packed with bold moves and some big risks. Although, by the end of the article I began to consider that this team they are building is together for 14 days, they play 7 games, and it's an all or nothing gambit, and sometimes it is easier to formulate a plan of attack/defense by going with the "devil you know". With a team in the NHL you are building for longer term.
