Since I posted this they have lost to Germany and are now leading 2-0 after two periods against the Yanks.

I repeat: Finland is an enigma. :drink:

Finland beats USA 6-2 to win the group.
Aho with the hat trick.

Finland wins group A.
USA comes in second place.
Canada will come third if they beat Germany, otherwise fourth.
The winner of Denmark vs Latvia will come fourth, unless Canada loses to Germany, in which case they will take third place.

Group B has yet to be decided.
Sweden faces Russia tonight, and the winner of the game also wins the group, the loser will come in second.
Czechs are in third place, Switzerland fourth.

So, quarter finals will be:
Finland vs Switzerland
USA vs the Czech Republic
Sweden/Russia vs Canada
Sweden/Russia vs Denmark/Latvia

Horvat isn't getting a sniff on even the second unit power play.
Peters is a terrible coach. Sure doesn't want to put Bo in any sort of position to succeed or do anything meaningful.
Actually, it looks like he just handed over the keys to McDavid and said do whatever you want with the lines and the ice-time.
Peters should be known as the final blow to Carolina's franchise.

And the final scores are in!

Sweden beat Russia 3-1 after another great game by Anders Nilsson.
Latvia beat Denmark 1-0.

That means Canada plays Russia and Sweden plays Latvia. 8-)

I worry about the Canadian goaltending. Russia might be a tall order.

I find it unfortunate that the Finns were eliminated. They were one of the most exciting teams of the tournament, with a lot of young talented players. Unfortunately what they possessed in speed and skill, they lacked in experience, and they had problems getting to grips with less talented teams playing strictly defence and just attempting the odd turnaround. It is mirrored in the results of their last five games:

Losing to Denmark (3-2)
Beating Canada (5-1)
Losing to Germany (3-2)
Beating the USA (6-2)
Losing to Switzerland (3-2)

If you look at the individual scoring stats at this point, the Finns have five players in the top 15, including two in the top four. Sweden and the USA have three each and Canada, Russia, the Czech Republic and Germany all have one each.

If they had only beaten Switzerland, I think they had had a shot at going all the way.

So, in hindsight, if we are purely selfish and ignore the quest for good hockey, I guess we should be happy the Swiss took them out....

Sweden is de-mol-ish-ing the USA! :)

Ten minutes into the second period and it's 4 freaking nil!

Final score 6-0.
Nilsson with the shutout. 8-)

The US dominated the first period, but lost it anyway, 1-0 for Sweden. In the second period Sweden was the better team imho, and won it 3-0. Then they sort of sat back in the third, as evidenced by only 2 SOG, but by then the US seemed to have lost all energy as well. Yeah, Sweden only had two shots in the third period, and scored two goals...

Sweden scored at equal strength, short-handed, on the power play and even an empty-netter, although I can't for the life of me understand why you even try pulling your goalie when you're behind 4-0... :look:

Looking forward to the final tomorrow!
Against Canada, perchance? Or the Swiss?

Edit: OK, I doublechecked. Four shots. We had four shots in the third period. Still.

I also like the team spirit as shown by Backlund taking a penalty to prevent a goal when it was less than a minute on the clock and Sweden was ahead 6-0. Nilsson was to have that shutout!

Highlights from the Sweden vs USA semifinal:

As you can see, the first two goals both came from Kincaid not having control of the puck and the US defence not standing their ground and keeping the Swedish forwards away from the crease.

After that, it was all fun and games! :)
