Slovakia beats Russia (or, technically "OAR", but... yeah... Russia) 3-2!

... and when you think things can't get crazier:

Slovenia beats the USA 3-2 in ot! Slovenia!
That's like a tiny little splinter of Yugoslavia.
And we all know how great a hockey nation Yugaslavia was, or... er...

Hilarious! :drink:
That IS funny. :D

Sweden beat Norway 4-0, but it's not much of a test. Neither will the game against Germany tomorrow be.
It's not till we face Finland on Sunday that we will get some idea of where the team stands.

Sweden beats Finland to win the group.
3-1, with the empty-netter.

Very physical game. A lot of emotion.
I can see that Pettersson might have had problems with his light frame.
Yet I miss his shot and smarts on the power play.

Sweden are aught for twelve on the power play in this tournament.
You heard right. Naught, zilch, nil, zero, nothing.
After playing Norway, Germany and Finland. It's a disgrace.

This team has a lot o heart and experience (NHL, KHL, AHL, SHL) but not a lot of top notch skill.
All our offensively skilled blueliners seem to be stuck in the NHL. These are more twoway or stay-at-home guys.
And our powerplay is all the worse for it, because the forwards don't seem to be able to create a lot either.
Imho it would have been smart to bring Elias Pettersson along as a 13th forward, and then use him extensively on the PP, and also give him some ice time against weaker teams or in games that are already decided.
He is leading the SHL in points per game, so there really shouldn't be that many players ahead of him in the line to make the team. I totally get that he needs to bulk up to be effective in games like this, but for chrissake! Zero goals in twelve power plays! Sheesh! And we know we had as smart a player and a sniper to boot like Pettersson available..... :|

Anyway. We won the group. We now face either Switzerland or Germany in the quarter final.
But damn, they need to practice on the power play!

Sweden loses to Germany in overtime.

Yeah. I said they should have gone with youth. Like Elias Pettersson. :hmmm:
Instead they built a team that could play defence but had no offensive skills whatsoever.

Oh well.

And the Finns are also eliminated. At least their women medalled.
Ours lost to Japan and finished second last, ahead of just the Koreans.

My only interest now will be to see if Erhoff can end his hockey career with an Olympic medal.
The Germans have two more games to play. If they win at least one, they get medals.

Semifinals will be Czechs against Russkies and Canada vs Germany.

I will focus on the curling event instead. Hurry hard! :look:

It was a good move to the net by the German to score in OT. A was a little unfortunate that Fasth appears to sweep it in himself in an attempt to get his glove on the rebound shot.

Do you think this German team has a good chance against Canada?

Interesting to see the Czechs find success in the shootout again.

The lack of NHL players on the other teams means Germany is not as inferior as they would normally be.
They actually have a pretty good team, with players like Ehrhoff and Marcel Goc.
They play a tight defence and they do have a couple of skilled guys that can create offence.
They beat Norway, Switzerland (in ot) and now Sweden (also in ot).

That being said, they should not pose a threat to a good team.
Sweden did not have a good team this year. Does Canada?

Not really!

Although one would think a half decent Canadian team could still beat the Germans.

Is that the 1st time since 1939 that Germany has defeated Sweden?
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

If you mean wars, our last was against Napoleon, in 1814. Can't recall Sweden ever having been defeated by Germany, as such, albeit king Gustav II Adolf died on German soil in 1632 during the 30 year war, but that conflict was between the Catholic League and the protestants, with German troops on both sides.

In hockey we've played Germany 20 times, starting in 1932, Western Germany 34 and Eastern Germany 16 times. Our only previous losses were against Eastern Germany in 1966, Western Germany in 1971 (on both occassions the coach was fired) and Germany in 1992. That last time was in the roundrobin of the World Championship that we ultimately won, so that coach wasn't fired. This coach will be.

Not at all. Just like the USA we decided to stay out of the war until attacked.

And to honour our neutral stance we delivered ball bearings that were essential for the production of tanks and aircraft to both sides. 8-)
Slightly more to Germany, but the British got a better discount.
