Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
I think Shinkaruk has a nice big chip on his shoulder. It upset him that Calgary passed him by in the draft and I think missing out on the World Juniors will piss him off to no end.
Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a player like Shinkaruk is to face adversity and keep growing that big ol' chip. I think he is going to be a beauty and I think he is going to come into camp next year on an absolute tear.

Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
The reason Ehrhoff walked was because Gillis wouldn't give him term. Gillis offered him the same deal he gave Bieksa and Hamhuis. Ehrhoff would have had a higher cap hit had he stayed here, but he wouldn't have gotten the enormously front-sided contract he got in Buffalo. Personally I think Gillis should have offered him a huge deal, not the $10M he got with the Sabers, but going $8M and then dropping off over a shorter term while keeping the cap hit in the $4M range would have been a smart move. The Brown Knight wrote:I agree with you on this one.RoyalDude wrote:Personally I'd take Erhoff cause he is great offensively and good defensively.
We should never have let Erhoff walk.
After it became obvious that Ballard wasn't fitting in well here, while Erhoff was such a key component to our PP and defense in general, Gillis should have waived Ballard and kept Erhoff ( on a side note though - would we have been on the hook for Ballard's salary had we done so?). Also - Buffalo offered Erhoff a huge up front signing bonus and a ridiculously highly front loaded contract. I can't remember what our cap situation was at the time, but Gillis may have had his hands tied? I honestly can't recall.
As for Ballard, somebody would have taken him in exchange for a prospect or something. Hell, even a 3rd or 4th round pick would have been fine in the event that Ehrhoff was sticking around.

Hunter Shinkaruk 5 goals, 11 assists in 18 games with Medicine Hat. Terrible numbers for a supposed WHL sniper-superstar, team leader.

Take these 8 off the team and we are worse than Buffalo and Edmonton combined.
If you take those 8 players off of the team, you pretty much remove the entire core. Remove the core of any team and the team looks like it will suck. But wait.....if you gut the core you are going to replace the core. So who knows what players would have filled in the gaps.
And as for Gillis versus previous management, should he have gutted the core when he took over and just traded away the group of players who ended up leading this team to within a game of the Cup just so he could prove to a few lunatic ass-hats that he had the chops to put together his own winning team? Almost every GM who does that ends up tanking the team and putting them in the cellar for a few years while they re-stock on top picks.....wait, that sounds familiar. Oh right, Edmonton did that, they've gone thru how many GM's in the last few years, and all of them did either jack shit because the ground-up rebuild had to let the youngsters develop.
Half of being a good GM when you take over a new team is recognizing which players to hold on to and which players to use as trade bait. Gillis has done a very good job of this with few exceptions.

Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
at 5'-10" - 180 lbs Hunter is going to have to be a lot better point production wise to survive the rigors against the men of the NHL. A bit concerning his small frame is starting to show signs of wear and tear. That being said, he's a young man, should have been heeled long ago from those injuries, he's had a clean bill of health for a while now, no excuses for him getting cut and players like leaves prospect - Gauthier making the team instead or the the two kids who were drafted with the picks we gave up for the great shut down play of Sami Pahlsson.Blob Mckenzie wrote:He has been injured most of the season Einstein. Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
If he didn't have a clean bill of health he wouldn't have been cleared for the trip to Europe before the final cuts. He has been playing for a while in Medicine Hat, it's not like he's old man Sami Salo. The only argument is that he could be behind the rest of the kids, but his play since coming back from IR has been very sub par for him. Why? His bread and butter is racking up the goals/points. That's the only way this kid makes it to the NHL, point producing, he's not like Horvat where he possesses a great 200 foot two way game. His lottery ticket is the blueline in.Blob Mckenzie wrote:He has been injured most of the season Einstein. And yet, despite his injuries and being drafted in later rounds he was still invited over many others ahead of him.RoyalDude wrote:If he didn't have a clean bill of health he wouldn't have been cleared for the trip to Europe before the final cuts. Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
Do you read what you type?? Being cleared to play doesn't mean you are back at 100% game shape. He's had a niggling hip injury all year. For a speedster, not having top gear sucks. But, he's still almost a ppg guy this year. He earned the tryout, but obviously, between injuries and missed games, didn't earn a spot on the roster.RoyalDude wrote:If he didn't have a clean bill of health he wouldn't have been cleared for the trip to Europe before the final cuts.Blob Mckenzie wrote:He has been injured most of the season Einstein. The Cup is soooooo ours!!!!!!!
Re: Canucks select Bo Horvat with the #9 pick
Alex Burrows had nothing to do with previous management, he was a Moose signing so take him off the list, your buddy Nonis doesn't get credit there. How's he doing in a Toronto anyway?RoyalDude wrote:I don't think you have enough excuses in their for Shinkaruk, Diehard. How about this, 'he sucked'. But hey, I mean how long has he been back from his injury, the young man? Maybe this might explain why he fell from the top 10 to us in the draft????Diehard1 wrote: Shinkaruk has a bad hip and bad shoulder, was nowhere near himself. He needs to now stop worrying about the world juniors and take some time off to heal, no use in playing at 50%.
We should all thank Nonis and Burke for putting together this Canucks team, even though only 6 of the 23 (2 for Burke, 3 for Nonis) were their doing. Cheveldayoff is the one to thank for Burrows. That leaves 17 for Gillis, so I figure he should get some of the credit at some point. I think the backhanded compliment you gave Gillis for Horvat is a big step for you RD.

As for Shinkaruk, he was injured, period. Yep he sucked but how about you actually look at the cause for once?
Gillis has been GM for 5 years, not 6, so those guys were from 6 seasons ago, not 7. He built the entire D corps aside from Edler who has been beyond awful this year, and Bieksa who is a solid member of the team. I think Hamhuis, Garrison, Stanton, Tanev is a pretty good track record of guys for 5 seasons - in fact it's pretty damn fantastic. Up front he's got some work to do, so let's see what he does. No matter what it is I'm sure you'll figure out some way to say he sucks.

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Besides being "past management" gets for the team, what else do these guys have in common?
I know you wanna say it Dude! Come on, get it out. Shy?
OK I'll let you off the hook. What they all have in common is that MG got all of them re-signed. Yep, didn't lose one to FA, not a one. I know I know , for some reason that doesn't count when assessing the entire body of a GM's work but you count it when one gets away, like Ehrhoff.
