My favourite moment from 24/7 was Tortorella yelling at Gaborik on the bench "Are you gonna stop for one fucking puck tonight?"
All due respect to Bieksa, but he and his buddies had the opportunity to lead themselves to the promised land, time to get someone in to drag them along if need be. I like that some players are probably nervous.

Chalk me up as one of those who like's the hiring.
It's pretty much been discussed on these boards already, but the minute Kevin Bieksa said they "don't need someone to come in and crack the whip" was the minute I knew someone like Torts was necessary.
We have a 2-3 year window and Torts will get the best out of this team for the next 1-2 years and by then there will be a new crop of coaches on the market. We've already seen that there aren't a ton of options on the roster front, so one way to make a bold move and really shake things up is with a hiring like this.
Gillis is all in on this one!

Gillis said he will never ask a player to waive one of the NTCs he so generously gives out.
Instead he'll just get Torts to make their lives so bloody miserable they'll beg Gillis to trade them.

I would have brought Torts in after the AV hiring in NY just for the extra motivation.
There's no way either of them want the other to succeed and will do anything to be more successful. Hopefully Torts wins the coaching trade.

Thats just crazy enough to work.Strangelove wrote:Gillis said he will never ask a player to waive one of the NTCs he so generously gives out.

Wouldn't want to be in Bieksa's skates right now.

Bold enough move flor you R D . This certainly will nnot be boring.. Whos the new "Brooksy" ?
Re: Vancouver Canucks hire asshole coach John Tortorella rum
I am not a fan of calling players out in public and I could careless if Brooksie, Golumsie and Sekeresie are made fools of.
The big change I see is responsibility will not be delegated to the core group of players. Each player will be held responsible. Control will be centralized.
No longer will the inmates be running the asylum. It may be run by a mad man, but it will only be run by one mad man.
Great to see Doc embracing Jack D. Ripper.

Surprised not shocked though.
People assume we will get the same Torts as near the end in New York. Thats not necessarily the truth. Like any coach I am sure he can adapt to different styles. Remember AV was known as a defensive coach when he got here and certainly wasnt a defensive coach the last 4-5 years.
Time will tell. Interesting to see the media's spin. They cant be happy and will unfortunately let that cloud their opinion. There is more to a coach then how he deals with the media.

Re: Vancouver Canucks hire asshole coach John Tortorella rum
For all you pussies out there, Torts *can* be nice:
So will Torts coach Kesler, Schneids, and the US Olympic team next year?
Will Torts tear the "C" off Henrik and give it to RK17 this Fall?
These questions and many more to be answered soon....

AV was sat down by Gillis and explained that the new owner had a mandate for exciting hockey.black ace wrote:Surprised not shocked though.

May be spin, but the Sedins' were apparently actually were hoping for Torts.

Re: Vancouver Canucks hire asshole coach John Tortorella rum
I have it confirmed by two friends that the Canucks have indeed made an offer which has been accepted in principle. A few smaller details to work but. Bottom line, Torts is now our new coach.
Not surprised to hear some of the players were hoping for him, that is consistent with what I was told back in May. I just could never really get my head around the idea that the rumours I heard had truth to them.
