Chicago is another team that is top heavy and there are all kinds of rumours of some serious rifts there now showing themselves. Too many cooks spoil the broth and all of that.
Nicholson is going to be running the business and brand of the Oilers, similar to what he would have been doing here had he accepted the position. He is an admin guy not a hockey op guy. There wouldn't have been any slap in the face to Trevor. Victor Debonis is the guy who would have been demoted or saw his job resposibilities reduced.
