Patrick Marleau's new one-year deal in San Jose is for the league-minimum $700,000.

Must love the game..
45 games played away from breaking Gordie Howe's record of all time games played. Pretty sure that was a factor in his decision making.
Gordie could have had well over 2,000 had he not Bobby Hulled it..
That's not at all what happened with Gordie. When Howe retired from the NHL at the end of the 70/71 season he was 43 years old, the only reason he came back and signed in the WHA was to play with his boys and he kept that going for one more season in the NHL to complete the experience as a 51 year old.

I still have the program from his final game in Vancouver as a Hartford Whaler March 28, 1980. How old were you back then? lol
18---ish. My parents talked with Gordie Howe often. Went to meetings with him quite a few times. It was the am-way those days. I was away
most of the time.
That's funny, I remember the Howe's being involved with Amway and did those commercials too. Yes so you were around my age back then, I'm surprised you saw a correlation there.

Yeahn, buyouts are no good because the cap-hits would carry over to the next season(s).

Petey and Hughes big bucks seasons.

Jimmy will add the necessary sweeteners to move contracts out IF he has to.

But he probably won't have to, this year at least.
If the doctors can get Ferland on LTIR for the season I think we should be in pretty good shape.
I hope the Canucks aren't counting on this. Ferland will likely attempt a comeback at least one more time and if he's fit to play, he has to have a spot.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he'll try to come back again, he seemingly has no concern about turning his brain into mush. I don't know if the medical people will be prepared to clear him to play again any time soon though. I can't see how personally, not after what went on last season. And even if he tries to come back again I doubt he makes it through camp without another flare up.

He's already skating, practicing and saying he's feeling great. No symptoms and is looking forward to the next season. Unless he has a set-back,
we can expect HIM back. Again.
Well, he is only 28 tears old so from that perspective, I understand his reluctance to give in to a long term interregnum. Hard to imagine he'll be
the player we thought we were getting though.

Is Curm American? Seems to me Mick has stated he served in the US military and the battle for Iwo Jima was a US/Japanese battle.

Yah, I know. Iwo Jima was 1945 and pretty well all the veterans who took part have passed on.

Mick, your actual age seems to be getting younger. Judging by timelines in your past posts you were about a year older than me, now you're three years younger. How is that?

Geez, they cleared him to skate again? That's disappointing. The guy can't skate two laps around the rink without his symptoms recurring. He's tougher to keep down than Robert De Niro was in Cape Fear. Hopefully he donates his brain to science, concussion researchers are going to want to look at that thing.

I think I'm a couple of years older than Mick as well. But why split hairs when most of us are geezers anyway.

This is actually the first forum I have ever belonged to where I could converse with my own age group and I think it's just a tremendous thing. :D

Frank, I was worried I was in that picture too and didn't remember. Then again I can't recall invading an island to go into battle with no pants and armed with a grass hockey stick. At least I wouldn't admit to it, even if there was photographic evidence. Having said that, Doc must be our vintage as well, considering his posts about the east end social club he hung out with.

I seem to recall the three of us were in Korea together, you, Doc and I. My memory of it is kind of a blur now.

However I'm certain that's where I picked of my knowledge of the deadly Oriental arts.

I think if a 'Healthy' Ferlund is 100%, then yes you want that dynamic on the ice.

If he is 95% and prone to another concussion, then no.

Problem is, He seems to want to play so bad that he appears to be less than accurate to the Docs so they can clear him to play. Unless he has some other kind of undetectable brain thingy happening which is fooling everyone...
Got a copy of the doctor’s notes, lab and MRI results did ya?

The father of the family I stayed with in Iowa had fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was stationed in Japan for a while after the war, visiting Nagasaki among other things. He didn't talk much about it though, and now he's been dead for quite some time.

They all lie to the doctors at some point. Just listen to some of Kesler's interviews lately. Even worse, he might feel "fine" even if he is not.

Personally, I would be very surprised if he does come back. With all of the new info on concussions, one would like to think that the league would shut him down for his own good, and their own liability. He's had quite a few over the years. 2014, 2018, November 2019. Setback in December 2019. New concussion, or a setback in February 2020, and then, the new one this fall. Throw in a few others that he has likely had but went undetected, and he looks like a walking Time Bomb. But, if he says he feels fine, and we have no way to test Humpty Dumpty without hitting him in the noggin.......

Agree with this. I would love to have him back but I can't see how the Canucks' team doctors or JB could look at him with a straight face and say he should keep playing. Canucks should sit him down, with concussion specialists, and simply say to him that it is in his best interests to go on LTIR. With the court cases going on the NHL would probably want to see the Canucks do this too for the good PR. For his own health/future, I really hope he listens to medical doctors, stays healthy and takes care of himself.

Ferland, love him, he's like a Gino Odjick and Matt Cooke rolled up into one, but concussions fucked him up, says he's good, playing 100%, gets into a fight, and he's out. That's what scares me, the unknown of when he gets hurt.
A long time ago, a baseball player remarked: "If I owned a ballclub, I'd hire a $5,000 coach and a $15,000 scout."
