They don`t have to physically send him to Chicago anymore do they?
Don't know. No one has seen the details in the CBA.
It was just a thought I had as being possible. AV has been about as complimentary of Schroeder in camp as he ever is with a young player (saying he "sees nothing wrong with his defensive coverage" is about as much praise a young player can get from AV).
To me if they had no intention of keeping Schroeder up he would have been sent back to the wolves with the other guys. He wasn't so it leads me to believe they want to give him some games OR they simply enjoy having players hang in the wind wondering about their future.
In what may be perhaps just a coincidence or might be overly convenient they delayed the decision just long enough so Schroeder won't be able to play with the Wolves tonight while the other 8 could catch an earlier flight and be there in time.
I maintain that based on the praise from both AV and Gillis that his demotion is very temporary. might be wrong of course.
^ agreed...he'll be up the next time a groin goes pop.
Demoting Schroeder at this point guarantees the team can maitain as much depth as possible. Nobody had to be put on waivers (yet).
It is encouraging that AV and Gillis had nothing but good things to say about Schroeder. AV saying that his defensive coverage was solid is about as much praise as a young guy's going to get from Alain.

Schroeder will likely be sent down unless Gillis moves a body via trade in the next few hours. Gillis, however, talked highly of Schroeder and they want to give him a chance. I have a feeling we will see Schroeder sent down and one of the other guys waived (at that point it is unlikely they'd get plucked off of waivers). 24 hours later the waiver wire guy gets demoted and Schroeder gets called up.
Why would it be less likely to get picked up on waivers a day later?
Prior to the decision on Schroeder being made public, GM Mike Gillis told the Canucks flagship radio station that he expects to see the Minnesota native back at some point during the abbreviated season.
“If Jordan Schroeder doesn't start with us, we fully anticipate him playing meaningful games for us very shortly,” Gillis said.
According to Vigneault, Gillis and his assistants, Lorne Henning and Laurence Gilman, examined “all the dynamics” when making their roster moves.
“There is not just the on-ice component that's going to go into the decision,” Vigneault said. “There are (salary) cap dynamics.”

Rosters are set and teams don't have room to pick up a player unless he's a huge improvement on what they have as it will usually necessitate them waiving their own player and keeping the picked up player on their roster for a certain amount of time.
This game gets played every year at this time as GMs wait to try to sneak guys through waivers they want for depth in the organization.
The praise from AV as well as the "very shortly" from Gillis would seem to indicate Schroeder will be back within a few games. It's possible they may give Barker and Vandermeer some icetime this weekend to make some final assessments.
Clearly 9 D-men on the roster is not a tenable situation for much longer than a few days. It allows Gillis to maybe protect some depth. He certainly couldn't waive Ebbett at this time as IF he was claimed the canucks have zero center depth to draw from in case of further injury. He wants to preserve as much defensive depth as possible and is likely looking for the best time to send someone down.

I doubt Barker suits up anytime soon.
It's starting to smell like Ballard is about to be traded.
