Right, only a true leader gets that kind of treatment.

His teammates LOVED him.

He was much much more than just one of their leading scorers.

He led a pretty average skill-wise group to Stanley Cup glory a coupla times if I recall.

Clarkie fought more often than most considered "Best NHL Leaders of All Time".

Much the way Matt Cooke is loved by his team mates.

edit, according to your first link Doc, he beat JC Trembley and lost to Billy Smith (a goaltender) LOL

and of course the comment on his Steve Vickers bout sums it up redundantly

http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/87344

He has better record beating cancer.

Wow talk about yer polar opposites in the Teammate Love category!

The only category these two both fall into is the Stir the Shit category (much like you are doing here)

.... difference being the Flyers were loaded with chaps who loved to scrap (they said: "stir Clarkie STIR!").

Clarkie was the Flyers' scoring leader most years and MVP every year, a perennial All-Star.

Matt Cookie was/is a two-bit punk; Bobby Clarke is an Officer of the Order of Canada baby!!!

Well Smith had 24 NHL fights, most occurring within a coupla seconds of laying on a 2-hander

(couldn't find the actual fight on youtube but found Smith got the extra two in that one)

LOL there are plenty of Clarkie-haters out there, chock it up to jealousy says I. :drink:

Hey, he didn't tell Roger to go out and get cancer.

But here's what he DID do:
On November 15, 1984, Bobby Clarke Night was held at the Spectrum. The Flyers retired Clarke's #16 jersey and unveiled the Bobby Clarke Trophy which is awarded annually to the Flyers' Most Valuable Player. Three years later Clarke was a first ballot inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Flyers created a team Hall of Fame in 1988, and the first two inductees were Clarke and Bernie Parent. He also played in the 2012 Winter Classic Alumni Game at Citizens Bank Park against the New York Rangers alumni.

In addition to his NHL honors, Clarke was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. The trophy he won in 1968 and 1969 with the Bombers, given annually to the Western Hockey League's top scorer, was renamed the Bob Clarke Trophy. He was inducted into three more halls of fame, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 as a charter member, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

Clarke finished his career 4th all-time in assists and 11th all-time in points, but he has since fallen to 24th all-time in assists and 42nd all-time in points (as of completion of 2010–11 NHL season[update]). His career plus-minus of +506 is 5th all-time. His back-to-back 89 assist seasons in 1974–75 and 1975–76 is still the Flyers team record and he also owns several other Philadelphia Flyers records, including:

All-time regular season
1st place - Most games played (1144)
4th place - Most goals (358)
1st place - Most assists (852)
1st place - Most points (1210)
4th place - Penalty minutes (1453)
1st place - Plus/Minus (+506)
1st place - Shorthanded goals (32)

All-time playoffs
1st place - Most games played (136)
5th place - Most goals (42)
1st place - Most assists (77)
1st place - Most points (119)

Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy 1972
Brownridge Trophy 1968, 1969
Class Guy Award 1982 -- OH IT'S TRUE!
Frank J. Selke Trophy 1983
Hart Memorial Trophy 1973, 1975, 1976
Lester B. Pearson Award 1974
Lester Patrick Trophy 1980
Lionel Conacher Award 1975
Lou Marsh Trophy 1975
NHL All-Star Game 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978
Stanley Cup champion captain 1974, 1975
Thanks for giving me the excuse to post all that Toppy! :D

Yeah Doc, Cookie Monster with skill, but when push came to shove, he cowered behind Schultz. That's not leadership, that's chicken shit.

Leaders on those Flyer teams, Moose Dupont & Gary Dornhoefer and the rest of the bucket brigade, even toss in both Smithers bro's. The guys who were Broad Street Bullies, not Broad Street Nancys.

edit: Clarke didn't make my list for the same reason Howe and Messier didn't make the list, they were punks.

whoa there Top...

You best be leaving Howe off your list of 'punks'.

That dude did more for the sport than anyone NOT named Wayne.

I understand that you have a hate on for clarke, (and believe me, I understand hockey-hate!) but Howe backed himself up on the ice, and was a class act off the ice. He was a tougher version of Stevie Y, but Stevie Y had a bit more on ice class.
The 'Chain of Command' is the chain I am going to beat you with until you understand I am in charge.

No, you do not understand.

I like both Howe and Clarke as players. Consummate assholes you could call them if you are into consummating assholes. But that wasn't the question.

Leading with your elbow is not leadership.

100% agree. Gordie Howe = Mr. Hockey

These lists are hard to take serious when the names Robinson, Potvin and Chelios aren't on most or all of the lists.

All three are easily top 10 in the last 40 years.

This thread is about leaders rather than fighters, but Clarkie had 35 - 42 NHL fights

(depending upon which of the 2 links you prefer).

Although not that big, he fought some of the best fighters in the game (fought Tiger to a draw).

He also beat the shit outta your boy Stan Mikita. :D

I've got Potvin at #4 on my list in the OP.

I seriously considered Chelly for my Top 10, he's prolly 13th.

A case could be made for Big Bird I suppose, he'd be in my personal Top 20.

Let's hear YOUR Top 10 Blobby!

I took Robinson from those great Habs teams and Trotier from the Islanders instead of Potvin, same with Stevie Y over Chelios.

Ratski, that list is linked in the OP, it's wot started all this! :P

I can't stop picturing Chelios + Suter with the Hawks in the 90's.

Prolly the most intimidating top pairing in the history of the NHL!

Chelly had enough brains for the both of them.....
