Doc I started watching hockey as a 6 year old in 75-76........I can't comment on anyone before then. I will go with what I have seen as the top leaders of their teams over the years
Steve Yzerman
Denis Potvin
Wayne Gretzky
Larry Robinson
Joe Sakic
Chris Chelios
Mario Lemieux
Nik Lidstrom
Bryan Trottier
Ron Francis
Hard to argue against anyone on that list. I suppose Lidstrom learned a thing or two about captaining from Stevie!
Obviously I hate you for not including Clarkie.
... unless you give him honourable mention.

Disagree about Mess & Big Al, both of them were MAJOR party animals. Partying is okay to an extent, but these two are alcoholcs in my books. Both of them were assholes, but the wrong kind of asshole imo. Both of them had run-ins with other leaders everywhere they went. I just flat out hate the two of them, but to each their own Blobster.
I like your Lanny Macdonald mention. One of the great unsung leaders ever methinks.
10-Cup Cournoyer may be another, although I personally was never much of a Habs fan
(unless they were playing the Leaves).
And I'm not going to argue against Parent, buddy stood on his head both years The Bullies won the Cup.
