One of these things is not like the other.
I am completely and totally on the fence about Semin.
Just can not decide whether he is worth the risk or not.
He doesn't "seem" like a GMMG kind of guy.
DeLevering since 1999.
Re: Semin
Therein lies the rub.. I think signing Semin, as talented and flakey as he is, would really go against GMMG's party line about bringing in character.donlever wrote:I am completely and totally on the fence about Semin.

That said, he could always go back to his "be like the Wings" ideals and try and reform the guy. I just have a feeling Semin would be more comfortable with at least another Russian on the team, which we're distinctly lacking.
Should be interesting to see where he lands up. I don't think I'd want him on a 4-year deal but I'm betting DET is desperate enough to do it now.

Re: Semin
The only way I see the Canucks getting this guy is if they miss out on others
(Weber trade, Luongo trade return, Doan).
Also, twould hafta be a one-year use-up-the-rest-of-cap-space type of contract
(like Pot brought up in regards to Doan).
Having said that, I'm pretty sure Detroit is desperate right now, having lost out on Parise and Suter.
They have tons of cap-space and buddy Datsyuk.
The Wings will get him.
I've heard Ken Holland craves semin.....

Re: Semin
Interesting quote from the Hurricanes today re: Semin, seems to confirm my original thoughts:
Also:“We would look at Semin on a short-term basis,” Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford told the Raleigh News & Observer. “We wouldn’t want to get locked in to anything, because we’ve all heard the stories about him. We do like his skill level. It could be that we could bring him in for a year, get to know him and go from there in terms of considering something longer term.”
Source: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2 ... bobby-ryanOne reason for Semin's availability is that the teams who, theoretically, should make a run at him are at least tangentially in on Nash and Ryan. The Pittsburgh Penguins are one such team, and Semin is interested in joining them, according to Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review—on a long-term deal, though. The Detroit Red Wings are another.

What exactly are the attitude problems or is that just an impression?ODB wrote: I don't "think" he'd be a good fit but a pure goal scorer with the Sedin's could be sickening. He produces a shit load of offence. Attitude and back checking... not so much.
What I want to know, how the hell does Semin end up with such a good +/- the past few years on a team without a defensive philosophy, and spotty goaltending?

They have gone with a defensive oriented system for a couple of years now.Zamboni Driver wrote: What I want to know, how the hell does Semin end up with such a good +/- the past few years on a team without a defensive philosophy, and spotty goaltending?
It was the beginning of the end for the great Alex Ovechkin.

Everything about Semin's stats screams "GET HIM!".donlever wrote: I am completely and totally on the fence about Semin.

The fact that nobody has signed him yet says "STEER CLEAR!".
Regardless of whether he's a GMMG kinda player, I don't think he's an AV type player in any way shape or form.

WHAT? Who better to protect the Sedins if Marc Staal goes after them?5thhorseman wrote:Forget about him playing with the Sedins ... that would leave our #1 line with no grit whatsoever. He could be that playmaker we need on the Kesler line though.
