If Luongo was traded to Toronto, do they have any prospects Vancouver should be interested in?

Burke's Plan Still Intact

excerpt:
"2009 Draft: Nazem Kadri, Kenny Ryan, Jesse Blacker. Yes, Kadri plays a skill game, and even though he’s relatively small he does throw his weight around and is occasionally a “head hunter” out on the ice. Just ask Paul Martin. Kenny Ryan is in the ECHL, but Jesse Blacker is another player along the lines of Kadri that has skill, but also hits, fights and is a bit of a “dirty” player (in a good way) if you want to call him that.

2010 Draft: Brad Ross. This guy was considered the biggest agitator in the draft class and has been compared to Darcy Tucker for years (this is not news to pretty well any Leaf fan at this point).

2011 Draft: Tyler Biggs, Stuart Percy. Percy is a cerebral guy who isn’t very physical but the real key here is Tyler Biggs. Already 6’3, 210lbs. That pretty well speaks for itself. Loves to hit, fight, get dirty and so on."

Hmmm, Tyler Biggs is a big physical right wing just like Kassian - but I'm not sure anyone from that list stands out as much as:

Luke Schenn 22, 6'2" 229 lb right side D
Jake Gardiner 21, 6'2" 184 lb left side offensive D
Carter Ashton 21, 6'3" 215 lb RW shoots left
Joe Colborne 22, 6'5" 213 lb C shoots left

@DownGoesBrown Braden Holtby played well but his team couldn’t score for him. Or as Canuck fans would put it, “THIS IS ALL HIS FAULT WE NEED TO TRADE HIM!”

Awesome article.

That coupled with the rumours that Vokoun is close to signing with a team in the KHL, Luongo's trade value just keeps getting better.

But truthishly Ohdee, I get where you're coming from with regards to the whole goalie dilemma... which really isn't a dilemma at all. However it all goes down, we'll be starting next season with a great goalie and solid assets from the trading of the other one. Personally, I slightly lean towards keeping Schneider but will in no way be disappointed in going with Lou/Lack next year.
2011..... the one that got away.

That is a really solid article.

Here's another one that is quite informative, and a good read if people are comparing Lou and Schneider.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=6288 ... nhl-search

For me the bottom line is the business.

Going with Luongo the Canucks get...
-experience
-a guy who has (some) better career numbers than both Roy and Brodeur
-a winning record
-leadership
-a fierce competitor
-a hefty contract
-2-3 years of good to great goaltending

Going with Schnedier the Canucks get...
-youth and energy
-a guy who is posting some insane numbers (albeit in a limited number of games)
-a winning record (also limited number of games)
-potential leadership?
-a competitive guy who never quits on the puck
-a reasonable price tag
-a decade and more of good to great goaltending

It is the last point that sells me on Schneider. I tended to lean that way before simply because the team just seems to play some great hockey in front of him, and for whatever reason there is just a more calm aura surrounding games in which Schneider is in net. But the bottom line has to be the fact that Luongo is 33 years old and Gillis has said he isn't quite sure that Lack is ready to back Cory up, which means that Lack isn't ready to backup Luongo and his future is uncertain. Schneider is ready now, and I would prefer to see this team remain younger rather than let a very good young player go. The Canucks have historically traded playable talent in exchange for uncertain future and busts. We just saw our organization draft and groom a very very good goaltender, trading him is a mistake, let's get some history going in Vancouver and start seeing some careers start AND finish here (and not the way Linden's did with a leave and return).

My preferred Laugh player package includes Franson (6-5, 25) & Komisarik (6-4, 30). An improving young (local) D and a solid (US Olympic selection) D with enough salary to make the trade $ work out.

On top of that, sign Bryan Allen (6-5, 31, UFA) as well, for a nastier set of D.

Then surplus can be dealt for second line help.

Cory hasn't proven he can put up the same numbers as he has being a #1 goalie, Roberto has proven he can play a 65+ game season. Lack with limited minutes, could back up Lou.

Franson might be 6' 5" but he plays like he's 5' 6"

Playing with a nasty sidekick (like Allen) will help him get over that. He's big enough to be solid on the puck, and anyone who watched him as a Giant can attest to his offensive abilities. Although 25, I think he has more game to give.

Komisarik is the main attraction in this package.

I feel oddly comfortable about this situation and trust that management and the team will come out of this looking good.

If Luongo stays then it says to me that he is committed to the Canucks. In Luongo we have a great goaltender with an impressive resume who has several years of high calibre play ahead of him. Keeping Luongo is the less risky move, but we don't know what is going on behind the scenes and therefore do not know if GMMG's decision has been made already by Luongo (did he request a trade?).

If Luongo is traded, I am fine with turning the page. Maybe this "core" group of players is in need of a bit of a shakeup. They have been together for a long time, and trading away a franchise cornerstone would certainly change the makeup of this team. I think Schneider has a very high ceiling, but he is nowhere near as much of a sure thing as Luongo is. Going with Schneider is more risky, IMO, but my goodness the ginger looks good. From what we have seen, it's hard to fathom that he wouldn't be a great #1.

Either way, we are sure to get one or two high calibre young players in a trade, which to me is exciting. I think we have a strong core group of guys who have several good years left; however, you can never keep your eyes off the future, and we will be much better off in the short and long terms if we can get 3 or 4 young players in the lineup full time next year (Tanev, Kassian, Schroeder, Jensen??). Down the road Schneider could be a key player that helps the organization transition from the Sedin era to whatever comes next.

Are you serious about wanting Komisarek? I don't know if he has any skills or assets to his game that I'd want on the Canucks, not to mention being overpaid for what he provides.

Sure, Luongo is more of a "sure thing", but Schneider is far from an unproven goalie...

71 NHL games over 5 pro seasons, and numerous career awards:

2004 David Peterson USA Goalie of the Year
2005 Hockey East All-Rookie Team
2005 Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award
2005 Hockey East All Tournament Team
2006 Boston College MVP
2006 Hockey East Goaltending Award
2006 Hockey East Second All Conference Team
2006 NCAA Northeastern Region Tournament MVP
2009 Named to the AHL All Star Game
2009 Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award
2011 NHL William Jennings Trophy (with Luongo)

NHL Career GAA of 2.24
NHL Career Save Percentage of 0.928

I believe he is the real thing, so I am not too concerned if Luongo is traded.

Although he likes to be physical, Komisarek played poor positionaly last year. He's due for a bounce back year, & the Laughs will be happy to exchange salary for a proven commodity in goal. Maybe happy enough to add a high draft, or take on another contract (Ballard). ;)

In truth, there isn't much on the Laughs that I covet. Deal with Tampa. The Flyers could offer much, but giving up on Bryzgalov probably means a management purge there (very unlikely).

As far as getting rid of Luongo goes. I'm not eager to lose either tender.

By the way, on the whole "taking back an expensive contract" thing...

The current cap is $64.3M

There is talk that the cap will rise to as much as $70M for 2012-13.

This means that even a $64.3M cap team could trade picks and prospects for Luongo ($5.3M) without the need to deal any roster players (other than their #1 Goalie, of course)

I hope the media (Nonis' nephew) can read and understand that.

If Luongo stays we know what we will be getting, but that's the problem isn't it? we know what Luongo can bring, and unfortunately that's all he can bring, as evidenced over the past 6 years. There's no room for Luongo to improve anymore in my opinion unless a change of environment sparks him to elevate his game to even higher.

I'm confident with Schneider, let's turn the page already.
