The Cats have a lot of money to spend right now.

They have dropped Sturm($2mil), Wolski($4mil), Clemmensen($1.2mil), Santorelli($1.6mil).

That's $8.8mil on 4 useless players.

Samuelsson($2.5mil) is also coming off the books as well as Bradley ($950).

Those two arguably earned their keep.

The point is their core is intact with only RFAs Kulikov/Versteeg/Ellerby to re-sign (3 mil total in raises?).

Florida fans have been wondering where they're gonna spend all this extra cash (they talk about Semin a lot).

The Cats aren't a salary floor team, they were ~ $55mil last year... and are obviously going to increase that this year.

The only bad contracts they have are Jovo($4.1mil) and Upshall($3.5mil).

It's not the end of the world if they keep those, if Upshall stays healthy he's worth that imo.

They're sitting at ~ $38mil, so they've got ~ $20mil to spend.

About $8mil will go towards re-signing Kulikov/Versteeg/Ellerby imo.

That leaves the $12mil for 3 depth forwards, a depth defenseman, and a goalie.

They can afford Lou without taking a salary back.

I'd take Matthias pretty happily but I think we are stuck with Upshall or someone like that as well. As such Petrovic and a 2nd does not do it for me, I'd need that to be a first rounder or I'd ask them to add Drew Shore or someone like that.

I believe Petrovic and Shore are of fairly equal value.

And yes I'd take Upshall if they upgraded to a 1st.

Luongo... for... Petrovic/Shore + Matthias + Upshall + 1st.

What I don't get in this proposition is that Bjugstad et al. are not NHL proven and we need someone proven, yet Petrovic is "da shit" after having played a bunch of AHL games. Yes, he's a good prospect. What he is not, is a centerpiece of a trade involving Luongo.

I have maintained all along that Bjugstad is a better prospect than Petrovic.

Exactly, the only team actively interested in Luongo that would have the money to do that (that is, throw well over 5 million at CS) is Toronto and if Burke does that he strips the team of picks again, like he did for Kessel, for one player, and if it's a one year deal the Canucks could probably deal with it and address a long term deal with CS later. If that happened, Burke would look desperate (yes, of course he is, but he hates to look that way) and since the Canucks would probably match what kind of message would that send to his goalies: "guys, you two suck so bad I'd rather give a 7 million dollar contract to a guy who has yet to play 40 games in one season...not...going...to...happen

Yes, this is the Toronto media fantasy network at it again. It's funny how Burke likes to say there is a lot of pressure on players playing in Toronto. I think it's the opposite, the media is part of the team; they're doing all they can to do the work for them.

Good point, if BB really wants his team in the playoffs next season, he'll do what it takes and stop being so god damn stubborn and pony up the goods to finally get a proven #1 goalie.

...that last part might be a coincidence but it can't really mean anything bad to Vancouver, can it? Also, kudos to Jovo. Luongo was not top 5 goalie last season, but it's really sad how undervalued he has become in the last couple of months.
