Widow, why are you so enamored with the AMEX line? Is it cause you like the name of the line?

Gragnani? Are you fucking serious?
Management appears to be. And frankly, if we move Ballard, I think Gragnani could fit into that 5-7 hole better (and cheaper) than he did.
Dude, it's the 2nd and 3rd line that are in need of major overhauling and one more stud on D. Of those 2 lines, the only players worthy of playing on them right now are Jansen and Kesler. The rest can fucking go.
Who is this Jansen you speak of? Hansen, or Jensen? Or is it Janssen?

AS to off season needs, well we definitely need to get bigger and harder to play against on the back end. Up front I am just as confused as most people as to what we need. Its hard to argue that shut down hockey doesn't work when you see what Phoenix has done and watch the Caps and NYR series. But we do need to score.

The biggest problem Widow is that for some reason Gillis decided to change the make up of a team in mid-stride from a high octane offensive puck possession team to a defensive team trying to play 'Shut Down Hockey'. Shut Down Hockey is a system. It's not made up of individuals labeled Shut Down Players. Shut Down Hockey is when all 20 members of the team buy into the Shut Down Hockey system the coach wants his team to play. It's a style of play when the WHOLE TEAM plays that way, elite skill guys can play shut down hockey all the way down to the least skilled guy, it doesn't fucking matter, it's a system, not an individual. The problem being, we have a skill set on this team, which is it's core group, that has never played Shut Down Hockey until now. They think in terms of creating offense and scoring goals. You don't need a team of Guy Carbonneaus and Bob Gainey's to play shut down hockey, it's a mental thing. The true meaning of a Shut Down Hockey Specialist player, means that he can't score and plays on the 4th line. There should only be one of Malhotra, Lappy and Pahlsson on this team, not 3. And they should be parked on the 4th line. Of those 3, Pahlsson is probaby the most valuable. All Lappiere does is make the other team want to fucking beat us.

You look at the coaches who are left here in the playoffs who are considered Shut Down Hockey systems installer, that being Hitchcock, Tippet. They lead the pack. Next is Trotz and Sutter, next is Deboer. Look at their line-ups, they are filled with SKILL GUYS playing a shut down system. It's a group of players buying into a system but in that group of players there is very deep set of very skilled hockey players who can contribute offensively while playing a shut down style, our problem was we didn't have the skill on the offensive side to successfully play a shut down system.

Tippet has some very skilled players on his team, Vrbata, Doan, Hanzel, Yandle, Ekman Larsson, Whitney, Vermette, Boedker etc. Don't think that because they play a Shut Down its because they are littered with Shut Down Specialists, they are skilled players buying into a shut down system that there coach has instilled in them.

Trade Lou + Tanev + Raymond for Nash.

Trade Edler + 1st (2012) + 1st (2013) for Weber (provided we can sign him to an extension first).

Ask Manny to retire and take another position with the team (otherwise waived).

Bring Salo back for 1 more year @ $1mil in a limited role.

Dank - Hank - Nank
Booth - Kess - Burr
Higgs - Schroeds - Hans
Bitz - Max - Kass
(Weise)

Huis - Juice
Ballard - Weber
Grags - Salo
(Rome)

Schneids
Lack

Jensen, Duco, Connauton callups from the Wolves. If Schroeds doesn’t look ready at the deadline, bring in a rental.

Win Cup.

Bravo Dude. Whether you call it Shutdown, agressive forechecking, neutral zone turnover, whatever... the successful playoff teams are playing a system where every line has to play the same way, whether it is in defensive coverage/positioning, checking, breakouts or creating offense. Of course your top guys have to use their skills to generate more offense under the system than the bottom guys.

We got one line that wants to control the puck and cycle, one that wants to go beast mode with one guy trying to do it all himself and the other two looking lost, one line trying to shutdown the opponent and one line that will sit for long stretches because the other three can't generate enough pressure on offense and can't sustain the pressure on defense. Just hoping and praying that the powerplay works if they get some calls is not good strategy.

Time to buy into a new religion.

Well I'm not necessarily saying fire the coach or trade everybody. But what is this vague concept of "playing the right way"? Everyone seems to play the right way in a different way.

I think the coach is very good, the core is still very good. The supporting cast needs some tweaking but maybe the style or direction has to be altered a bit more drastically? The core ain't getting younger and healthier.

I think you're running into another Hodgson situation in mis-casting Schroeder in that 3rd line role. Not that the 3rd line C has to be a shut-down guy in the Malhotra/Pahlsson mold, but I'm not sure Schroeder's finesse-oriented style would mesh with two north-south forecheckers. Besides, in addition to getting YOUNGER, the team has to get BIGGER. Schroeds doesn't really fit that profile. In fact, given the way the playoffs are playing out the Canucks would be better off signing someone like Kelly and let him and Max battle it out for the 3rd/4th line spots if Gillis can't get someone bigger and meaner.

Honestly, Schroeder looks like trade bait for a bigger fish. I like the kid and if the team's state was more along the lines of Edmonton or Minnesota, I would argue to give him a chance to develop on the team. But he's not going to supplant Kesler or Hank any time soon, so unless he can turn into a brawny, scoring winger his greatest value is as a trade piece.

I don't think everyone is giving Manny 'no offense' his spot back as the 3rd line center - I think they're saying that 'if' he's better, back to what he was 2 years ago, then it's his spot to lose.

Remember, he was a 30-35 point, Selke caliber center and those guys are hard to get. He was also the best faceoff man in the league (only guy with a better percentage is Steckel and I don't think his competition is close to Manny's) and could defensively anchor a line.

If he's the guy he was last season - he's not good enough for the job. If he's back - he's exactly what you want.

I keep hearing Schroeder has been working hard on his 2-way game this season.

Another "Hodgson situation" is extremely unlikely.

Schroeder, like most rookies, will no doubt embrace his initial role.

We are talking about three 2-way players here, what's the problem. :drink:

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
