To your 12 million you can add Corys 1 million (rounded up) to make 13 million.

Then you can deduct whatever he is signed for from that total leaving you less than the 12 you speak of unfortunately.

Caps going up it can still work with a tweak here and there.

MG's job.

For sure, I guess I was just pointing out we can fit a premiere offensive guy to the roster without too much trouble. Is Salo going to be back? Will Pahlsson stay? Do you need a $1.2M Alberts in the 7-8 hole etc. etc.

Also, having Tanev and Kassian on the roster full-time next season could be bargain deal for a combined $1.7M cap hit (roughly that of Hodgson, btw ).

I don't mind the mobile defense model when it works. But lets be honest, we played "b" grade defense against the kings. Our mobile defense wasn't very mobile against an aggressive/strong forecheck, our shutdown defense pairing was only OK but not great, we weren't boxing people out, weren't picking up coverage... hell everyone was focussed on the puck when LA snuck in and bagged the tying goal with 4 canucks right there.

My preference is a much stronger, more responsible defensive scheme that can ALSO move the puck. We need a #1 anchor style defense. Pair him with Edler/Hammer/Ballard (if he is a righty). I doubt we keep both Edler & Ballard. Elder appears to have more skill but Ballard is much meaner. I don't want a Lady Bing defensemen.

I recognize the needs on offense but I really want the d taken care of first. I wouldn't take anything for granted on offense either as to who gets a pass and who is a possible trade. Its entirely possible we see Burrows, Booth, Raymond or some of the other guys (depth oriented) as possible trade pieces. Hell we have Steve Reinprecht doing very little with the Wolves.

I know MG keeps hinting that he is only going to tinker but he has surprised us in the past.

lol Island with the empty #3 centre spot... didn't you know that Farhan has already guaranteed us Vinny LeCavalier?

...personally, and I may be in the minority here, I think it is time for us to move on from Salo.

He has performed yeomans work when healthy for us but man did his ass (as you note) start to drag as the year went on and he had serious difficulties keeping pace in the post season.

With all the effort he had to place on defense his offense dried right up as well (although one could argue it was a team issue)..

Regardless I understand that the 2 mill is a nice salary and all but to me the Fin has done his duty here and we should part ways....

Moving forward....

... which is why, last summer, some of were saying we needed to shelter Salo's minutes.

(didn't AV or Gillis hint about that last summer?)

We've needed that BEAST RS dee for a long time now by my reckoning.

Pretty sure Salo won't be back.

Geez.

You think you might have at least mentioned it if that's the case.

Personally I think Salo will be back, but at a reduced role. He's fine as a #6 guy/PP specialist, but he shouldn't be -playing top 4 minutes like he did most of this year. He sure wore down in the playoffs.

I'd like to see a new dman or two come in, somebody who is more defensive in nature because there are lots of puck movers back there but no real shutdown guys - Rome is one but he's not top 4 caliber.

I'd also like to see another top 6 forward but I have no idea who that will be, other than Parise who will be badly overpaid.

There will be lots of trades this offseason with all the underperforming teams that went out in the first round, and of course those that missed the playoffs entirely. I'm not sure what will happen as it all depends on the NHL getting its head out of its ass long enough to complete a new CBA, but it could be a very interesting offseason.

The Canucks have a page to track their off season moves, with current lists of UFAs and RFAs.

I could see Aaron Rome persuing other opportunities where he'll get a chance to play every night.

If Rome leaves than I could see Salo coming back as a 6/7 PP specialist guy, which I think would be more than acceptable.

Gillis' biggest challenge will be finding somebody to play with Edler. Strangelove's "Beast" if you will. I'd prefer if this were a younger, long term guy.

Yeah, I'm thinking the Lou for Komasarek makes sense if he's willing to go there. A Edler-Komasarek pairing looks good, he can play tuff nasty defensive hockey and allow Edler to play more offensive.

I hope Romeo stays though and even though I love Salo, I'm mixed on bringing him back.

Sadly, I agree. Salo has been a solid player for us but we need to get younger and meaner. Would just hate to see SS suffer another injury, which given his history, is a distinct possibility.
I just hope if he still wants to play, he signs with an Eastern Conf team.

Personally I agree that as a top 6 regular on an contender his days may be done (perhaps as a #6). However, if I were to choose between ALberts, Rome and Salo as a #7/8 type of guy I'd pick Salo every time. But I'm not sure Salo wants that type of role.

I hope Salo stays in that 6-7 role. He's been a leader for us and he obviously can still play, just not every game, every night. Play him on the bottom pairing and on the PP.

You simply cannot have a top-4 guy taking "scheduled maintenance days" late in the season.
