Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
My view is that the sellers that need goaltending will still need goaltending when the draft rolls around. They are unlikely to put forth significant assets at the deadline to acquire that goaltender (and I don't think Gillis moves Schneider for a package of rentals). At the draft you may also have a couple more teams that are currently buyers with no goaltending issue that all of sudden have a goaltending issue (UFA, injury, playoff disappointment etc.). To me the Schneider market is at it's peak at teh draft.
That said, I agree if Gillis can find that package Pot is talking about he is going to be extremely tempted. But I also think he's tempted with the possibility to make a draft day splash.

In other words, we can't play them that way and neither can anyone else.Island Nucklehead wrote:

Fred, the idea that we have to beat the bruins in a punch up in order to actually beat them in a hockey game is totally absurd, and I think you know it.
Are you trolling again?

Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
There was some sort of discussion regarding Vanriemsdyk for Luke Schenn on one of the networks last night. So if that's been put on hold due to VRD's recent concussion, is Schenn/another player for Schneider/Ballard a possibility?Potatoe1 wrote:The Market for Schneider might never be better.Vancouver Canucks are getting significant offers for Cory Schneider. - Bob McKenzie.
There are quite of few teams looking for a long term solution in net, Ottawa, Toronto, NJ, Islanders, Tampa, CJB.
I don't think trading Schneider this year was part of the plan but if Gillis can package up Schneider and Ballard, then bring back a young top 4 defenseman, a solid back up, and a gritty veteran forward, you would have to be tempted.
Would u?

Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
To add to the speculation, he played 14 minutes in last nights game, the least of all of the leaves d-men. In the doghouse a bit? He's 6'2 229 lbs and shoots right according to tsn.
The leaves have 2 potentially decent back ups who can fill in although nobody anywhere near Cory.
Are we comfortable with Luongo still come April?
Would Schenn be the big, tough defenceman we need in the top 4?
This proposal has some interesting angles in my opinion.

I probably would assuming the leaves also take Ballard.Uncle dans leg wrote: There was some sort of discussion regarding Vanriemsdyk for Luke Schenn on one of the networks last night. I like Schneider a ton but I don't think he actually increases our cup chances by very much.
He's basically an insurance policy against Lu getting injured or totally blowing up, but I'm not sure I like our chances if that happens either way.
Schenn fills very clear needs in terms of both toughness and depth. I know he isn't having that great of a season but he's right handed shooting, 21-year old, who is exceptionally physical and above average in both zones.
He makes our team better on a nightly basis for probably the next 10 years, Schneider only makes us better on the nights he plays and hopefully he doesn't make us better at all in the playoffs.

Schneider and Ballard for Schenn, Gustavsson & Brown?Potatoe1 wrote:I probably would assuming the leaves also take Ballard.Uncle dans leg wrote: There was some sort of discussion regarding Vanriemsdyk for Luke Schenn on one of the networks last night. You can include Vancouver in this group too.Potatoe1 wrote:The Market for Schneider might never be better.Vancouver Canucks are getting significant offers for Cory Schneider. - Bob McKenzie.

Its my belief that Mike Gillis & co. are coming up to a crossroads with their own goalie situation, and are looking for the Canucks long term solution in goal.
The most responsible thing to do, both short term (this season/playoffs) and long term (next year and beyond) is to hold on to Schneider until the off-season and make a move then. Luongo is a very good goalie, a true #1 franchise keeper. He has experienced almost as much success in the playoffs as he has endured. What is still unknown is if Luongo can take the next step in becoming among the elite in the post-season.
Luongo has one more Spring to prove he is best option for this club moving forward. The long-term choice in net will be determined in the off-season, where one of Luongo or Schneider will move on. In the meantime, Gillis will continue to field calls and establish the market value of the assets he holds.
Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
I'm in two minds about the Canucks trading Schneider.Potatoe1 wrote: I like Schneider a ton but I don't think he actually increases our cup chances by very much.
-On the one hand, the Canucks seem to be getting some good offers (as you said.....source: Bob McKenzie).
-On the other hand, I think there's just too much uncertainty/doubt about Roberto Luongo come playoff time. Don't get me wrong - I love Luongo, and he is capable of having some tremendous games for us in the playoffs (as he did last year), but I also think that there's too much potential for toxicity....almost as a ridiculous/unrealistic level. What I mean by that is this: If Luongo has even ONE major stinker in ANY of the games in the playoffs,
1) The media in both our city and the opposing city will be all over him (and given Luongo's psyche, I'm not sure if that's a good thing, lol).
2) The Canucks, as they did last year when they played Chicago and Boston, will lose confidence in Lou and could start overcommiting on defense (I have a feeling that one reason why the Canucks' offense dried up against the Hawks and B's, was because they started overcommiting on defense once they experienced a blow-out loss.....games in which Luongo was terrible).
Long story short - I think the Canucks should keep Schneider at all costs right now. Schneider gives us another option.....and can potentially prevent some MAJOR distractions. If it was up to me actually, I'd have Schneider be our #1 guy....and Luongo be our #2. If the Canucks truly are hell bent in trading one of their goalies for help elsewhere, I'd try and move Luongo. At this point though, I think the Canucks are better off holding onto both goalies.

Pretty tempting though eh?
Schenn gives us a physical right side defenseman, Brown looks like a fairly ideal 4th liner for this team (why did we ditch that guy BTW?), and Guss is still a good back up.
We get tougher, deeper, and more balanced both short term and long.
If Luongo keeps his shit together that team becomes the very clear favorite in the west.

Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
So taking this a step further regarding those potential Schneider trading partners, who on those said teams would be enough for you to pull the trigger on?Potatoe1 wrote:Vancouver Canucks are getting significant offers for Cory Schneider. - Bob McKenzie.
There are quite of few teams looking for a long term solution in net, Ottawa, Toronto, NJ, Islanders, Tampa, CJB.
Ottawa needs to lay down a package of either or or a combination of etc., Mark Stone, that Swede they drafted in last years draft, Turris, Cowen or and their 1st round pick plus a player mentioned.
Toronto? Hmm, not liking what I see in that system, Schenn and a 1st round pick, but even that doesn't interest me.
New Jersey? Adam Larrson, Henrique, 1st round pick. Not sure what else is in there system. Larsson would definitely have to be part of the package.
NY Islanders??? HMM, well there is nothing there that would interest me in a one for one unless it's Tavares. The Islanders would have to be throwing in these players plus a 1st round pick - De Haan, Strome, Netterieter.
Tampa Bay. Well, I like Connolly, Brent Ashton's kid Carter, who is putting up great numbers in the minors, that Russian they drafted right before we drafted Niklas Jensen and their first round pick. Hedman as well, but can't see TB putting him on sale for Schneids. The more I look at Tampa, Hedman seems to be the player that would benefit us the most. I like Connolly and Ashton but me thinks that Hedman would fit in quite well with our team. Even though this isn't popular around these parts due to the love affair for small defenseman, Hamhius, Bieksa, Ballard and Gleason, Hedman's big stature would do us well.
CJB. This is the trading partner I want, I absolutely would love to have Port Moody kid Ryan Johansen home of the Port Arms Hotel and Jakes Crossing is it, but I can't see The Blow Jobs giving him up, especially after they sold the farm for that idiot Jeff Carter.
So out of everybody you mention Pot Roast, I would like to deal with Tampa, New Jersey or the CBJ's for Johansen, Larsson or Hedman. And out of those 3 I would want Johansen the most. If Hedman is not on the table I'd be happy with Connolly and Ashton. Two big and skilled wingers that will solidify our future at the forward position with Hodgson and Jensen after the Sedin era is winding down.

Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
Mike Brown was a serviceable player when a Canuck, but he I'm not sure he can be counted on as much of an upgrade over what we have now, Weiss. I surely don't Iike the idea of Jonas Gustavsson as Luongo's back-up going into the playoffs this year, I would be much more comfortable with Schneider looking to get his chance.Potatoe1 wrote:wienerdog wrote: Schneider and Ballard for Schenn, Gustavsson & Brown?

Pot, tossing the window dressing aside for a moment, would you trade Schneider for Schenn straight up? Does this improve Vancouver's chance of winning the cup?

God that would be sweet. I know that I'm about to go into dream land here, but hey.......it's a hockey board.RoyalDude wrote: Tavares.
If Tavares truly was on the table, then I'd be willing to part ways with Schneider (and whatever else it took to get Tavares).
Putting Hodgson and Tavares together would be fucking mint.
It will never happen in a million years, but that would be sweet.
Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
You're overvaluing Cory. He is a promising goaltender who is number one on probably a lot of NHL teams right now, but he is not worth Connolly AND Ashton. Larrsson AND Henrique from NJ? No way in hell Dude.RoyalDude wrote:So taking this a step further........................Potatoe1 wrote:Vancouver Canucks are getting significant offers for Cory Schneider. - Bob McKenzie.

I'm with ya that if Schneider is moved we will be selling high, but even Ballard plus Schnieder doesn't equal some of the dreams we all have.
As for Schenn, I'm still not sold. Sure he has upside but aside from him filling the right side and a better version of Alberts the price of Schneider is too much IMO.
With Rome coming back and Sulzer proving he can play and Tanev waiting in the wings Ballard can go.

Re: Trade Deadline Discussion
I wasn't suggesting asking for both Henrique and Larsson. To be honest I'd do straight up for Larsson. His ceiling is higher than Connolly or Ashton which is why I think Connolly and Ashton as a package is do-able. Connolly and Ashton are still risks where as I think there are no risks regarding Adam Larsson. We may have to toss in extra's to get Connolly and Ashton, to be honest I'd throw in our 2012 first along with Schneider to get Connolly and Ashton. Man do I wish we had drafted Ashton instead of that shrimp Schroeder.CFP! wrote:

Schenn is another Alberts type, terrible fighter as well. SO no way in hell I am trading a Cory Schneider straight up for Schenn. The leaves have nothing to pad that deal that would interest me. I don't like anything in their system.
Out of everyone mentioned I want Ryan Johansen in a Canuck uni the most.
