don't see it anywhere else...does team 1040 say they actually signed him, or that they are trying to sign him?
Edit: see your post now.
At 2.5, the Canucks will match, and it's only a year. I wonder though if the Canucks wouldn't rather have him sign a multi-year deal.

Ya its official. What a sneaky move. Turnabout is fair play though. We'll have to sign him for 2.5 now then and hope he's worth it.

I really don't mind this because I see $2.5 million as a fair price for his potential (this is based on what the market has dictated). I'm positive Gillis will match. My only concern is, can the term of the contract be tweaked to say 3 years or do the Canucks have to make it a 1 year deal?

I'm not liking this for a couple of reasons.
Bernier's rep made a comment when he was hired about offer sheets:
http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/ ... e1a70a6bfc
The key part :
There were rumours Bernier would sign an offer sheet, but Lupien said that was never in the plans.
"I don't work like that," said Lupien, who also represents Roberto Luongo and could have gone the offer-sheet route after Luongo accepted his qualifying offer from the Canucks. "I've always asked teams to be honest with my client and I'm sure he (Gillis) is going to be honest with players after being a former player himself."
If that was the case a few days ago, what changed ?
Unless this is April first, Gillis has a lot of 'splainin' to do.
For those watching my adding, the second part was Gillis.

2.5 million is probably a bit more than he would have signed for, but no big deal...
Unfortunately, from my understanding of it, Gillis will have to match the term as well as the salary. I'm not sure though - someone please correct me if I'm wrong...
I also question why Bernier would sign the offer when he knew he'd get something close to that from the Canucks anyway... for the small difference you'd think he might want to stay on better terms with his new team...

Whatever, the guy's been bumped around lately so it doesn't surprise me he'd sign it. He's never had a big contract in his life so the allure of 2.5 mill was probably strong. My only concern is the term is well and if everything works out well and he sees some quality time with the Sedins than he is likely to post career numbers, possibly notching 20-25 goals which would then command a larger salary next year. Kind of a pain but one that I'm hoping we have.
