Marek Malik

Post by mattola »

should we trade for him to help us out on Defense? Do we need him? He was solid when he was here but has struggled of late in NY.

would a Cooke plus a 2nd round pick do it?

Cooke plus a 2nd might be a bit of an overpayment in my mind. Merek would be an upgrade on Weaver but he's not a top 4 D at this point in his career. Maybe a change of scenery would get him back to where he was but perhaps not.

I think we will be ok on D. Salo and Krijcek shouldn't be too long. We know Willie willl likely be playing through some pain, but should be back soon. If Bieksa skates today and finds that he is way behind progress, than we should consider something.

However, I don't think Malik will have a significant impact in the short term.

it might be a very good option if another one of our defensemen comes down with an injury and we have the cap space to do it. his long reach is invaluable and is a much better option than Weaver.

id definitely do that deal...i'd try cooke & weaver before cooke & a draft pick

i guess i should ask first: how much time left on malik's contract, and how much is it? anyone know?

last year?, yeah i would do it, w/o thinking about it...malik has always had an unbelievable +/-, which means he's just good positionally...b/c i don't remember him being particularly quick...

in fact, according to this, he's got one of the best "ratings" (plus-minus at 5v5 rated against the rest of his team) on the NYR, all achieved going up against the top players on the other team (check out the quality of competition column):
http://www.behindthenet.ca/2007/basic_5 ... =&team=NYR

and he has a corsi number of +9.1, which is the number of shots for while he's on the ice, minus the number of shots against. just for comparison, the highest corsi number on the 'nucks right now is, with more than 6 games in a 'nucks uniform, D. Sedin w/ +7.6
http://www.behindthenet.ca/2007/basic_5 ... =&team=VAN

this kind of defensemen is exactly what lui needs as well.

and seeing as he is on the IR, he would fit right in on the Canucks D....

oops... maybe do a straight up then, our injured dman for yours

he is day to day (isn't everyone), although he has had quite a bit of injury time this season

i'd still do it i think, but maybe just cooke.

No thanks to marek Malik. A decent D-man but he played about as tough as Edith Bunker in his own end. Once everybody gets back he'll be sitting in the press box. Unless we can get a guy to run the PP, there is no need to trade for a large, moderately skilled, soft defenceman.
