He's trying to get Tavares to sign an AHL deal so he can opt out of the 2009 draft and sign with the leaves once his contract is up. I believe the best term for it is disgraceful.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't understand why Tavares or the leaves would do this?
From Tavares' standpoint, if he goes this route, and is drafted by a team that is not the leaves, he can't play for them until 2011. The only way he'll play in the NHL earlier is to immediately make the team that drafts him or force that team to trade him somewhere he does.
He might make more money this year and next, but after that, he's bound by the CBA. I suppose the leaves could offer him an obnoxious amount of money to stay with the Marlies until 2011, but why would Tavares play in the AHL for four years when he obviously wants to make the NHL now.
From the leaves standpoint, even if they convince him to stay with the Marlies until he's eligible for free agency, there is no guarantee that he signs with the leaves afterwards.

Tell me how that isn't meddling? Once a player is drafted his rights belong to the team that selected him and (as far as I know) it's against the rules for any team to attempt to negotiate with him. (Until he becomes an RFA)Jyrki21 wrote:I don't see the big deal. Any team can try to persuade a player not to sign with the team that drafts him. An AHL contract has nothing to do with it.
How then is it any different to try and stop a player from signing with the team that drafts him before he is drafted? That just makes a mockery of the whole draft system. Why would any player bother announcing for the draft if they know they can sign a cushy AHL deal (reports say the Tavares deal is in the $4M a season range) with their home town team and just hang around there until they are 21. There needs to be a rule change here, or all NHL temas are going to latch onto this and sign all the most talented youngsters before they're draft elgible. Why not just allow teams to purchase the rights to player off their agents/players again?

This kid really has a big head, doesn't he know he wasn't a impact player at the world junior level against the Russians! He wasn't even on a regular line, mostly PP. Ripping it up in the OHL is one thing but taking it to the next level is a whole new ball game.
