Carolina gets Anson Carter

Post by Jelly » Fri Feb 23, 2007 11:03 am

for a 5th rounder in 2008

interesting how Nonis sits this one out.

proven chemisty, for just a 5th rounder? I would take that in a heart beat, give them bulis and santala too...for the salaries..

I know most everyone is going to say how could Nonis pass him up but if he wasn't worth the money to Nonis in the fall why would he be worth the money and a draft pick now ?
I'd much rather see an Owen Nolan or someone else who could work with Naslund , we already have someone to work with the Sedins and I didn't notice Pyatt working that well with Naslund tho I suppose it is possible as he discovers his confidence and actually becomes a decent player . Still I'd rather see someone other than Carter.

Not disappointed at all. This year Carter has displayed all the reasons why teams weren't willing to give him much of a chance when he signed with Vancouver and why no one was interested in giving him a mutli-year deal worth any sort of money. He just can't seem to decide if he wants to put all his effort into playing hockey or not.

Proven chemistry sure but that only matters if the guy is working hard as well. And this year Carter has made it quite obvious he isn't willing to work as hard as he needs to.

I'm glad Nonis stayed away from this one.

BUT he does need to add a couple of pieces to be sure.

I've been critical of Nonis on his FA signings this season but I won't on this non acquisition. Carter hasn't played well with CBJs and when you look at his history he alternates good seasons with not so good seasons. Carter is currently fitting into this cycle. He also has poor seasons the years he is moved in mid season which means he doesn't adjust quickly to his new surroundings. I'd rather see Nonis get a solid D-man first, then if he can clear the 3 Horsemen of the Apathetic (Bulis, Chouinard, Santala) acquire a rental center for Naslund.

While I believe that Carter has more value with our squad than any other because of his proven ability to mesh with the Sedins - he clearly takes his time to learn a new system (he didn't really start performing last season until he had 15-20 games under his belt, and his start this season was horrible). Given that AV's system is completely different than Crow's, I could see Carter taking a while to adapt to this season's new-look 'Nucks - and that would hurt us in the stretch drive for playoff positioning.

Besides, our first and foremost need is for an upgrade over Rory in our third defensive pairing. As AV - rather surprisingly, I thought - confirmed last night.
Modo vincis, modo vinceris.

I don't mind at all that DN passed on Carter ... after a great season with the Nucks last year Carter showed us that he didn't want to be here and play with the Sedin's ... his priorities lay elsewhere ... thats fine whatever ...

... I'm still hoping for Owen Nolan.

Meh, Carter may have a history with the twins, albeit a short one, but he also has a habit of dogging it......I'll keep Pyatt.....5th rounder or not.

I would love to see Barrett Jackman in a 'nucks Jesey

I'm not disapointed we didnt' try him out. I'm surprized that, after all the overpaying happening earlier, how Carolina got him for only a fifth. Wasn't there supposedly a market for this guy? The best they could get was a fifth round pick?

I think this bodes well for other potential FA's that aren't considered top-tier. While St Lou might want a first+ for the likes of Guerin, I think if Nonis plays his cards right, dealing a 2nd and a 3-5th rounder(s) could get us some suitible depth guys.

Here's an interesting tidbit, Anson is now the second most traded active player (7 times) in the NHL. This still ranks him well behind Mike "Just name the trade deadline after me" Sillinger (10 times, and I'd bet he's moving on Tuesday).

Wierd ... I wonder why it is that certain players get traded so much (Brent Ashton was another one) ?? Are they really that much in demand or is it that they are a problem to have around on any kind of long term basis ?

i believe some had to do with the player's versitility, face off specialist? defensive, physical, hockey, and probably leadership and experience to top it off.

It's interesting, but Nonis was on the radio this morning bemoaning the asking price for rentals. "It's a joke", he said.

Now, obviously a 5th rounder ain't that expensive for a rental. So, as I see it, either DN's aiming for a much higher quality player than Predator or the other GMs are still continuing to test whether they can flat-out steal Nonis' lunch money - like Clarke tried during the off-season with the Kessler term sheet.

I think if Nonis wanted Carter, he would have given up more than a 5th...maybe a 4th? All kidding aside, there might be some doubt as to wether Carter would fit this system, or if he could be a better force than Taylor Pyatt is now.

It's pretty obvious DN passed this one by, which to me sais he is working on something else. Guerin nor Nolan have moved yet, maybe one or two of our second rounders are in the mix, especially considering where the Kings pick will place.
