At the start of the year, many people around the league were talking about the possibility that the NW Division was going to be home to the best goalie battle in the NHL.
At the All-Star break (slightly over halfway), here are the statistical breakdowns. We can use Brodeur as the gold standard so to speak.
MARTIN BRODEUR 29-13-4 (SO) 8 2.01(GAA) .928(SV%)
ROBERTO LUONGO 27-16-1 (SO)3 2.38(GAA) .918(SV%)
MIIKKA KIPRUSOFF 24-16-3 (SO)6 2.28(GAA) .921(SV%)
MANNY FERNANDEZ 21-15-1 (SO)2 2.58(GAA) .911(SV%)
DWAYNE ROLOSON 20-18-4 (SO)3 2.69(GAA) .908 (SV%)
PETER BUDAJ 15-10-2 (SO)1 2.53(GAA) 911(SV%)
JOSE THEODORE 9-10-1 (SO)0 3.13(GAA) .897(SV%)
Interesting comments:
*The Theodore contract continues to be an albatross. He has not regained his Hart Trophy form and has been outplayed to a significant degree by the younger and cheaper Budaj.
*Kipprusoff leads in GAA and Save % but is not far ahead of Luongo. If Calgary could fix its PK problems those numbers would probably sparkle closer to Brodeur's current stats. Lunogo is a clear jump up now from the other 4(5?) goalies underneath.
*Roloson has appeared in 43 games so far this year, a lot when you consider his previous seasons. The All-Star break could provide some possibly much needed rest. The Vancouver and Calgary tenders have are playing games at the same pace.
*Minny and Colorado have both seen their backups come in and do a solid job (more-so in Colorado). Fernandez had a few week stretch where his confidence was shattered, but appears to be getting back into form.
*Clear leader in shutouts.

just a comment on roloson. ever since he got injured at the end of last years playoffs he's really not played as well. however to give him the benefit of the doubt his lack of success, and the oilers too might have a lot to do with teh fact that they lost brewer, pronger, staois and smyth and moreau to injury. then again i might be way off.
