Unwritten Rules of Hockey

Postby Soapy » Fri Nov 24, 2006 10:43 am

What exactly are all the unwritten rules of hockey? I've started a bit of a list (very bored on a friday) but there must be hundreds of little rules that I forget......feel free to re-word or add to my rules if they are incomplete.

Rule #1 Keep your head up
Rule #2 Keep your stick on the ice
Rule #3 Don't admire your passes..especially drop passes
Rule #4 Always finish your check
Rule #5 When fighting you have to stop punching when the ref's come in or your opponent goes down.
Rule#6 Sucker punches are for cowards
Rule#7 You can never hit the goalie
Rule#8 Do not run up the score
Rule#9 Never shoot the puck after the whistle
Rule#10 Fighters can only fight other fighters...the dancers dance & the singers sing

-If you're going to beak, be prepared to take a hit, stick to the chops, or shed the mitts.
-Defend the keeper at all costs, even if it means taking on their goon. Send the message.

- In a big scrum, help your teammates.
- Don't knee other players.
- Show respect to your opponents after the game, no matter how dirty or how lopsided the game was.

that one should be the first one. It sort of encompasses a bunch of the others

(At least this used to be a rule)

Area in front of the net is a high abuse area, either don't stand there or don't complain if abused.

This WAS #1 on the list but it's been slowly going away for years now. The players are losing respect for each other. No amount of rule changes or enforcement are going to stop the injuries if the players can't get back to respecting each others health, lives and livelyhoods.

- If someone goes after your star players make them pay. ( I realize that the instigator rule makes this somewhat less practicable, but I still think it holds despite the stupid rule.)
Invincibility lies in oneself.
Vincibility lies in the enemy.

Rule #13 - If the score is lopsided, do not celebrate a goal, whether you are on the losing or winning side of the blowout.
Rule #13 (a) - Rule #13 does not apply if it is your first goal in the NHL or makes you reach a major milestone.
Rule #13 (a)(i) - Bonus class points if you don't celebrate a goal DESPITE Rule #13(a).
Rule #14 - If a player is in a vulnerable position, ease up.

A funny side note, an ESPN columnist published the "Unwritten Rules of Sports". The vast majority of them are of course the big three NFL, NBA and MLB. But funny nonetheless. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/caple/020409.html

My personal favourites from that list:
Fans in Los Angeles must leave in the fourth quarter/third period/sixth inning to beat the traffic.
and
Baseball managers must wear uniforms, as if they will actually get into the game in the late innings. Basketball coaches must wear $3,000, finely tailored suits, as if they will pose for GQ during halftime. Football coaches must wear cheap nylon jogging suits as if they shop at Foot Locker.
