1) I'm a little mixed about Bourdon staying here. On one hand, I'm GLAD that he's staying since I'd hate to see him turn into Josh Holden (i.e. tries way too hard to make the team at training camp, overthinks, and constantly chokes). In a way, I think its good that Veenyo is letting him stay, so that he just relaxes...and gets back to playing like he was.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how many 19 year old defensemen have been successful....or have gone on to be successful. The worst thing a coach can do, is rush someone. The Canucks were patient with Mattias Ohlund, and it paid dividends. Dion Phaneuf didn't enter the NHL until he was 21.

2) I'm disappointed that Bouck didn't make it. The guy came to camp in the best shape. His hustle and enthusiasm was unparalleled. I thought he deserved a chance to stay. These are the types of guys that ALL teams need.
Bouck sucks.

He brings no offense, mediocre defense, and hustle. The Canucks need guys who are capable of chipping in with goals from the bottom six.

Bouck has never shown me anything more than a big ol' bowl of 'meh'.

Not sure where you're getting that tant, everything I've been hearing is just the opposite in that he been one of the FEW players who's actually CREATING offensive opportunities and that he was one of the standout forwards in most every game he played. True he hadn't been finishing his chances but thats nothing to worry about....when an offensive player doesn't create chances then you should worry. Aside from the Sedins & say Kesler....who's been more impressive INCLUDING veterans on a regular basis during this preseason?

tantalum wrote:Reid failed to grab a position. He didn't outplay anyone enough to earn a top 6 spot and frankly he is not suited for the bottom 6 and never will be. People forget that a guy like Reid has to outplay someone not only in camp but show more than what a veteran has historically shown (i.e. Chouinard has been a fulltime NHL player for quite some time and plays a role that Reid can not).. He didn't do that. Not even close. And it was a foregone conclusion when camp started.

i also hope bouck getting cut can stop people believing that he is an NHL player as well.
I agree with these comments to some extent. Brandon Reid 'looks good' ie. he skates fast and dipsy-doodles around and everyone gets excited and say 'wow' - but does it translate into points. If you look at Reid's stats in Europe they were OK but it's not as if he won the scoring title there either. It pains me to say this because I actually LIKE Reid and want him to do well, but flash has to equal points and he hasn't been outrageously successful in pre-season in that department. I'm hoping he lights it up in Manitoba and gets a chance as a callup this season.

Bouck. Yeah. I'm surprised he's still with the team.

It's a shame Reid didn't stick, especially with Chouinard and Santala - the twin peaks of mediocrity - still with the big club, but them's the breaks. The kid has speed as well as good skill. He can rack up the points as he showed the last time he was in Manitoba. I hope he gets the nod for the first injury we get to our forwards.

The problem with Reid is on what line do you play him? The top two centre spots are spoken for. That leaves 3rd or 4th line centre. Reid is not a 4th line centre. To me 4th line centres are face-off specialists, shut-down guys, or energy/shift-disturber guys. Reid is none of those. If he could show some defensive responsibility, he could make a case for the 3rd line, but then we have Kesler there. The only spot I see for Reid is if he or Kesler slides to the wing opposite Burrows, but that makes for an awfully tiny 3rd line. Then you have to factor which one of Cooke, Pyatt or Bulis will be left off the top two lines, and that takes up that 3rd line wing spot.

Sad to say, but barring an injury in the big club Reid will be in Winnipeg for a long time.

The knock on Reid isn't just that he doesn't have much finish, but that he also overhandles the puck instead of dishing it off to his teammates.

Yeah, his speed, stickhandling and hustle are impressive. He frequently makes you get up out of your seat and say, "Holy crap!" But he almost never seems to convert those skills into tangible results (except for that one admittedly great game he had against the Lightning four or so years back when he potted a couple of goals).

So let's compare him to our other centres.

Do you play him over Hank? Not on your life!

Do you play him over Mo? I don't think so.

Do you play him over Kesler? No again. I think Kes has clearly been the better player this preseason.

Is Reid a fourth line checking centre? Hmmmn. I think the big bodies and faceoff skills of Santala or Chouinard probably fit in better there.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see where you fit a Reid in on this team, unless one of Hank, Mo or Kes goes down with an injury (knock on wood).

Of course we all knew they would be, and always are...but then why come out and say the 'best men for the job' will win the spots, blah blah. Create a false sense of hope to make camp more competitive?
My thoughts exactly when I saw the cuts. The brass might as well have had two separate camps, one for one-way contracts (= the team) and another for two-way contracts.

I haven't seen Bourdon play that much but how much better is he than Allen at the same age? Serious question.

That was against Nashville (When they were a laughing-stock) in 2003, and I was at that game. Reid had 2 goals and showed lot's of speed and hustle.

I was at that game too and Reid was terrific. He was buzzing around the net and he made the goalie look like a total journeyman sieve. By the way, the Nashville goalie in that game was someone named Wade Flaherty. I believe that may have been the last NHL game played in regular season.

Clam everyone that I've talked to that has seen Reid this camp and in the pre-season games has a similar opinion to Tant: he has a couple good rushes, but ultimately nothing happens. I think you might be overrating his play a bit. If he was one of the standout forwards on the team, don't you think they would have kept him in camp a bit longer just to give him more of a look?
A guy like Reid has to score and generate offence to be worth something to the team, and outside of the first game he hasn't done anything. I think if Reid had have been lighting it up like a guy like Hansen, who scored in most of the scrimmages and games he has played in, he would unquestionably still be with the big club. Hansen has shown through his play that he deserves a longer look with the Canucks, Reid hasn't shown that. Simple as that.

The others summed it up best I think. Reid LOOKS exciting and like he's doing something but in the end he doesn't accomplish anything. It's Steve Kariya syndrome. Unfortunately for Reid the team has better offensive depth than when Kariya got a cup of coffee in the big leagues.

And that's what I've been hearing in the snippets of games I listen to and from peoples reports that have gone to the game. He buzzes a little bit but ends up doing nothing. And ultimately he isn't going to replace those ahead of him on the depth chart for a variety of reasons (not good enough offensively/defesisvely)

It's not that I'm jumping for joy that Reid didn't make it. I was in my own way rooting for the little guy, but I never truly thought he had what it takes. I said as much when they signed him early in the summer.

It's not as if Reid HAS TO play C. He has tradtionally never been strong in the face-off circle, not to mention his small size. Why not use him on the right side with the Sedins? With the Sedins' passing Reid could get a lot of breakaways - the only downside is Reid is more of a run n' gun player rather than a cycle player.

With Reid on the second line you can have Pyatt and Bulis on the third, and Pyatt from what I've heard has shown pretty good offensive ability thus far.

Naslund - Morrison - Cooke
Sedin - Sedin - Reid
Pyatt - Santala - Bulis
Burrows - Kesler - Linden

Now you have 2 solid scoring lines, a third line that can play defense and offense, and a fourth line that brings energy along with a veteran.

He played the wing in some of the preseason games and was also ultimately ineffective.

But you run into the same thing. He isn't good enough to replace Bulis in the top 6 or even Cooke. And he doesn't have what it takes to pass any of the bottom 6 wingers for those roles.

Reid is all flash with no results......

Tant is bang on with his assessment on Reid.

If he can't outplay a top 6 forward he sure isn't going to be put on a checking lne or a grinding line.

Hansen has been working hard and getting results - that's why he's still here....

If Reid had done anything close to that then maybe there would be an argument to take a closer look.

Sorry Clam... I just think you're wrong on this one....

I think I get worked up because I see a dash of offense with him in the line up. I have not seen any great offense ( Sedins Excluded) from anyone else.
I don't see him lighting it up at the NHL level but he does bring you out of your seat every once in a while.
