What is the expectation with Jake? Signed for cheap or traded?
I'm having a hard time reading Jim's mind on this one.

We know he doesn't have much patience when it comes to waiting for party boys to grow up.

If I had to guess, I'd say he's probably going to trade him.

I'd like see to Jake stay and find his game, but if he brings us a decent return on D, I'll be okay with that.

I expect him to be traded too.

Could be the missing piece to get rid of dead weight contract.

Looking over our group of forwards, theres a hole now. Jake deserves a crack at that spot buuuuut....he needs to earn a bigger payday beforehand.

A short term, team friendly show me contract or the highway kid. How bad do you wanna be a canuck

they need him now that Toffoli is gone, can't see Jimbro trading him unless he's got a adequate RW'er coming back in the deal

Green needs to stop yanking his chain. You don't want him? Go tell JB. Then give him the Stumpy treatment so the GM can get some sort of return.

But you know TG will still play the fuck outta the ilk like Leivo over Jake. He better realize that Aqua has huge expectations now and everyone is on a short leash.

BW, we all know people like Jake (Doyle). These breeds of humans never evolve. They are forever flakey. Jake is like the new David Booth.

Second, not overspending on a fourth line would be an improvement, wouldn't it?
Not to nitpick, but this criticism is always framed differently than the way I see it...

Benning has been very up front that his belief is that rebuilding teams need older, character type players to insulate and teach the younger players...

Agree or disagree, that is his his method of building a team and should be the debate...Bennings way or just load up on kids and let them sink or swim on their own?...

When an organization is rebuilding they are paying too much money and too long a term in order to attract those veteran players which is what has happened in Vancouver...

In a perfect world, those veteran contracts would expire just as the team has become competitive again and has a roster of blue chip young players who are moving into bigger paydays.....

It seems that Benning missed that perfect scenario by a year or two with the team returning to the playoffs before those veteran contracts have expired...

Many in the hockey world are saying that the team is ahead of schedule mostly because of Pettersson and Hughes...

Ever since Benning arrived, he has been dealing from a position of weakness and most of his moves have been criticised ....

That has started to change with the likes of the Miller deal and the Edler signing and now not overpaying for Markstrom and Tanev and the Schmidt deal...

Some have suggested that he is starting to learn how to manage, I say it's a reflection of finally being able to deal from a position of strength....

So on reflection he has hired a very good coaching staff and landed some elite talent thru the draft and has started to make some astute moves at the pro level...

In a nutshell, he has returned the team to relevance around the league which it hasn't been for a number of years....

I think the next big challenge will be how he handles the Pettersson and Hughes deals which could be his biggest challenge to date...

This isn’t news to the likes of Doc and I. But then again we’ve always been 1-2 years ahead of everybody
I'm laughing at people who are now waking up to follow expiring contracts. Doc and I were discussing it when the Genius began his rebuildtool and everyone was arguing semantics
Good grief. I get a kick how the 'knuckle-grounders' continue to ignore how much of a shit-show Benning created with the outrageously over-priced contracts he dished out to 4th line players, not to mention Eriksson's albatross. I'm inclined to believe that Benning's learning curve has come to fruition now and we'll be less apt to see the overblown contracts of the past being evident in the future (stu crosses his fingers). But hey, I was one of the first to commend Benning after the Canucks finished off St Louis for having a nice blend/balance of players. But along came Vegas and taught Benning and the rest of us about what it really takes to get to the final rounds, and having a sluggish over-paid 4th and 3rd line isn't the formula. Maybe it was true that Benning had to overpay to get players to come here - bummer (gotta wonder how Edmonton entices free agents??).

Anyways we are where we are with the contracts because of Benning. It appears he's being shrewd now about the future - Bravo! He's obviously making the best of things now. Had he not drafted so well, I'm sure mgt. would have let him go by now. It took him 8 years to get where we are. Maybe that's just how long it takes to go from being in a dog-house and eventually evolving to residing in a 3 story modern townhouse? Some teams seem to stay stuck, and others evolve even sooner. Maybe a case could be made that as a mgr evolves, so too does the team?

This is a good post, and lays out the "bring the kids up with vets" philosophy and how the Canucks are ahead of the curve now.

But you know, my comment doesn't take a position one way or another on the "bring up kids with vets" philosophy. If you have that philosophy and you no longer need to overspend on the 4th line, well, that's an improvement, isn't it?

Getting Schmidt is great, rolling him and then Hughes every second or third shift is going to be a treat to watch, but I'm bullish on the Holtby signing as well. Mentioned this before, it reminds me of the Miller signing in that they have a fine goaltending prospect they're grooming who's not quite ready for the definitive number one role and they need that veteran presence to help bridge the time without being on a longterm deal and while still providing a high level of play.

Demko is coming up on 25 as Markstrom was when Miller came in but Holtby is only 31 while Miller was 35 when he joined the team. I wasn't a Miller fan and didn't like the signing but he gave the Canucks some pretty good goaltending, was a solid citizen and great teammate who clearly enjoyed being here and I came to respect and appreciate him for all of that. He also helped in providing Markstrom with the time and environment to develop nicely for the team and ultimately he became a top tier starter and the team MVP.

I think Holtby's experience and personalty will really compliment and help Demko and working with Ian Clark, I'd be quite surprised if he didn't rebound to provide real quality goaltending for the Canucks.

UMMMMM. I'm betting Lord Benning already knew, he's wiser than the rest of us about all things hockey, that's why he gets the big bucks.

nuckster wrote: Tue Oct 13, 2020 8:17 pm Maybe it was true that Benning had to overpay to get players to come here - bummer (gotta wonder how Edmonton entices free agents??).
It's is widely known (and common sense) that if a UFA has a choice of signing with a playoff team or a rebuilding team

... he's gonna choose the playoff team 90% of the time unless the rebuilding team offers up more term/dollars.

We know that Eriksson, Rooster, and Beagle had other offers.

Jimmy even stated at the time of the signings he had to give the latter two an extra year for them to come here.

And believe it or not he was in a bidding war for the former.

nuckster wrote: Tue Oct 13, 2020 8:17 pm Anyways we are where we are with the contracts because of Benning.
We're also here because Covid shaved $5M off the salary cap and because of the $3M on the books from a Gillis signing + trade.

Jim has always been shrewd, you should read the post from your fellow ster on the previous page of this thread.

6 years.

One could make the case of Manager Jim evolving only if one uses a severely flawed narrative such as the one you just presented.
