Even though Lord Benning is from a hockey family, an NHLer since 1981, an assistant GM since 2006, it's kinda like...
"I have been a fan for many years, and as such am way more qualified than Jim Benning to be the Canucks GM. From my elevated perch, I can look down on him as he stumbles about down there, a mere peasant, a buffoon compared to the great me. Every baseless rumour that suggests he may have goofed somewhere is one I embrace with open arms, as it reinforces my delusion of how truly awesome I am. Out of benevolence, I will acknowledge when he seems to have taken a baby step here or there, hey if he's lucky he could grow up one day to almost be as wise as me! Sure I push a broom for a living, but I know in my heart of hearts I would make a much better GM than Elmer, among others. I can see myself at a gathering of Canucks brass passing on my suggestions as they marvel at my my wisdom, and afterwards we'll relax over a few drinks with myself as the admired and beloved centre of attention..."

I think it has to be noted Hamhuis's attendance record,

Three out of four of his last years with the Canucks just made everything more difficult or, at least, uncertain.

I’m a bald fat 5 ft 4 300 pound filthy, ugly man living in Abbotsford. I have a small penis, a dog that likes a good pounding and am the best burger maker at McDonald’s. I’m in my 60s and like to head out to Deroche for entertainment while enhaling copious amounts of free food from McDonald’s. I shower once a month to wash all the burger grease off

Hockey Widow, thanks for setting out the additional facts a portion of which I have included above. I don't think it changes my original point that I don't think Benning communicated things well with Hamhuis. Canucks knew that Hamhuis wanted to stay a Canuck and, as you note, that he was not interested in waiving his NTC. They also knew before the deadline that he would take a discount to stay. What changed Hamhuis's mind in all of this was Benning advising him "with about a week to go" before the deadline that they decided to move on. Thats when Hamhuis took a bit of time to consider things and agree to waive. However, it was late in the day and a number of teams had made trades. I think Chicago had already made a number of acquisitions by that point.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 11:58 amHere’s what happened. Over the summer Canucks decided NOT to entertain new contracts for both Hamhuis and Vrbata at that time. Both guys were told that. Hamhuis WAS asked if he’d consider waiving his NTC. He said no. Vrbata had a MNTC and wasn’t asked at that time.Linc wrote: ↑Thu Dec 06, 2018 11:33 pm We were talking about Hamhuis not Garrison. I wondered if I was misremembering things a bit and did a search of the trade at the time. By the time Hamhuis was available a lot of teams had already made decisions. Cam Cole wrote an interesting article after the deadline - "Vancouver Canucks misplayed their best asset, Dan Hamhuis, in NHL trade deadline's biggest blunder". I don't think many people think it was Benning's finest hour.
Canucks let it be known they would circle back in January, assess where the team was at and determine if either player fit in their plans moving forward. By January Hamhuis was hurt on IR. Vrbata had disappeared. They tried moving Vrbata but had no interest. When the trade deadline approached they got his list and we all know the story.
With Hamhuis the Canucks were torn about moving him or not. As the deadline approached they did ask him with about a week to go. He said no, wanted to negotiate a new deal. Canucks then told him they decided to move on from him. With about 2 days before the deadline he indicated that yes he would waive but gave a very limited number of teams, Dallas and Chicago. Chicago had expressed some interest but then declined leaving only Dallas and they chose Russell.
As you note, Canucks had not extended Hamhuis in the summer and then he was injured during the season. Surely by the time of the injury they were not going to know much more about his skills before the deadline then they already knew. If Benning and company did not decide to move on from Hamhuis until they told him days before the deadline, then that seems poor management to me. If they knew it earlier (which I suspect was the case), then they should have had the difficult discussion with him a couple of weeks earlier so Hamhuis could get his mind around what he wanted to do in the situation, consult with his family, and they could work out a trade before teams started moving assets or choose not to waive.
Like you, I have no issue with how Hamhuis handled things. I am also a fan of Bennings; however, I just don't think he handled that matter very well for the team or for Hamhuis.

Good points Linc. Fact is Hamhuis was still an effective player. The team handled it poorly and hopefully they learned something. For whatever reason there is a group of people unwilling or unable to open their minds even a cunt hair to the fact that this management may have made a few mistakes during their tenure. They get their backs up if other posters point out a mistake however obvious it may be and “will have Jimbro’s back at all costs” regardless of how foolish they look.Linc wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 1:00 amHockey Widow, thanks for setting out the additional facts a portion of which I have included above. Hamuis sucked earlier in the year and the legitimate concern was father time had caught up to him. It is the same logic you are using in your trade Brock ideas. Funny that logic is reversed in your keep hammer posts.

Hamhuis had one stretch of bad play after a fairly stellar career. He has played well since leaving here and is currently playing the top 4 of one of the leagues best teams due to injuries.
Topper clearly enjoys being proven wrong over and over and over.
Blob wants to trade Boeser for Duncan Keith. When in doubt make shit up right.
It’s like fishing with dynamite on this board right now.
