He did initially struggle in NJ but then he had a great second year and then three good years in Toronto. He returned to Jersey and produced at a decent clip but Lou buried him in the minors and he retired

As others have pointed out, Canucks haven't had a happy-ending to a Russian draft pick or player since Larionov.
It wasn't a happy ending for me.

I always felt if The Professor had stuck around we would have won the Cup in '94.

There were stories going around that the Canucks management team was mistreating Russians.

Mostly McPhee, who seemed to have a hate-on for them in those days.

We know this had a lot to do with Pavel eventually requesting a trade

... but I suspect it had something to do with Igor leaving as well.
Igor’s contract expired in 92. Rather than continue paying the Russian sports agency a good portion of his salary he opted to play in Switzerland for the 92-93 season. I think his buddy Makarov did too. Quinn made a stupid move by not protecting him instead of Tom Fergus and the Sharks selected him in the waiver draft. The Russians let him sign with the Sharksand let him and Makarov our of their aggreements. Losing Igor was on Quinn.
Well I'm pretty sure neither McPhee nor Quinn made Igor comfortable in Vancouver.

And I'm sure they could've offered him enough money to dissuade him from Switzerland if they so chose.

That "stupid move" in not retaining Larionov's rights is further proof Canucks management didn't like Russians much.

Yup, after scoring 25 points in 35 games, Lou sent Almo to the minors for the rest of the season.

Why? Because he needed the cap-room for Elias, who was returning from injury.

(entire cap-hit of players sent down came off the books in those days)

Mogilny played the rest of the season for the River Rats... and then retired.

Lou's evil plan was to force Mogilny into retirement.

He knew Almo wouldn't want to spend the entire next season on the farm (which is what Lou said he'd do).

So Mr Mogilny walked away from the $3.5M he was due in 2006-07... pretty huge in those days.

Add Svechnikov to the arsenal of Horvat, Boeser, Dahlen, Pettersson, Gaudette, Lind etc, and all you need is a QB dman to get those weapons the puck ala Pens style.
That QB dman could be acquired via trading one of this forwards listed above.

There's a couple guys you might be able to trade for this offseason.

Carolina seems prime for some major moves.

RD 25yr old, 6'0, 215lbs Justin Faulk $4.83M x2 years left, top pairing scoring dman, 23-24min TOI, powerplay guy, not the best defensively, has an ugly mustache and psycho eyes aha.

RD 23yr old 6'0, 183lbs Matt Dumba 2.55M RFA, 30-40 pt dman, QB guy, not the best defensively, prone to some mistakes, skinny dude.

Or you could hope RFA Brandon Montour agent just decides he wants mad cash & then he becomes avail, would cost Tanev with a small +.

Or the never ending tanev for liljegren swap or Zeitsev if he has a poor playoffs.

Then there's the blockbuster's Karlsson+Ryan or OEL types.
A long time ago, a baseball player remarked: "If I owned a ballclub, I'd hire a $5,000 coach and a $15,000 scout."

While we desperately need dmen, it seems the consensus BPa after Dahlen is Svechnikov or Tkachuck. I’d take the Russian. Him and Petterson and Horvat-Boeser have the makings for a talented attack that would give teams a matchup nightmare.

I don't know UDL, Svechnikov is a beast sniper. Zadina reminds me of Yakupov. I'm a little leery of Zadina. Also does drafting Svechnikov inspire Tryamkin to come back sooner than later?

Reading where some believe Svechnikov is actually older than listed. Just like Mikhail Gringorenko was believed to be older than 18 when he was drafted.

They're thinking Svechnikov has that same bust trajectory. Plus, he's Russian.

I'd say stay the fuck away from this guy.
Try to focus on 1 year from now...

Russians are bad...no more polonium cocktails for this guy. The napkin just reminded us all about drinking that brew

That Svechnikov is already in NA should be viewed as a positive. Always need to be wary of the guy pulling a Nichushkin, but it would be insane to pass on an Ovechkin or Malkin or Tarasenko or Kucherov or Sergachev because we’re worried they’d flee.

The Russians selected later, like Tryamkin, who feel entitled to NHL positions are a greater risk to run, but the impact players generally stick around.

Is Svechnikov’s older brother Andrei also in possession of a doctored passport ?

There’s zero evidence he’s older than represented, other than some random blogger who says he has heard something but can’t substantiate it. Would love to hear a credible source weigh in, but until then he’s still 18. I would take Svechnikov without hesitation, the kid is going to be very good and a power forward goal scorer would be another great piece.

That said, D is badly needed somewhere in this draft. Either trade for a guy who can play now (or very soon) this offseason, or load up on dmen. We need to find the next wave of D in the worst way.

Hmmm. I havent thought about it like that.

So when they must earn it theyre a risk as opposed when they hold down a top spot theyre gold. Except for the exceptions ie:Kovalchuk or marshmallow giants like napkin.

Still...with all the extra bullshit involved in owning one why not just trade down and grab Brady Tkachuk or even make a play for a couple of picks in the 7 - 14 range.

The key is finishing dead last so we end up with the 4th overall pick. Keeps us in that top 4 group of Dahlin, Tkachuk, Svechnikov and Zadina. But something tells me that Benning is picking a D-man if we end up picking 4th. Leaving one of Tkachuk, Zadina or Svechnikov available at 5. If Benning has learned anything from 2016 he should avoid that at all cost. Picking a shrimp D like Boqvist instead of one of Tkachuk, Zadina or Svechnikov would be committing hari kari
