What should Benning do with Edler?

What should Benning do with Edler?
So, what do you think? Lots of different views on Edler. After watching his play in the 2012 playoffs with LA (lots of blunders/miscues), he seems to be consistently capable of being inconsistent defensively, including no-look passes, give-aways, and bone-head decision-making. Yet, hes not afraid to be physical, and he is capable of making decent passes. We're rebuilding, should that include Edler? Would the Canucks be better served by trading Edler for picks?

Re: What should Benning do with Edler?
Kick tires on a few teams "off the record" no leaks if there is interest in the league for his services.
IF so, ask if he'd waive his NTC for such and such team and try to get a couple young pieces plus a pick.
Dallas Stars seem like the obvious team.
Alex Edler for Lindell + Ritchie + 3rd.

Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
Re: What should Benning do with Edler?
Edler seems to have become so comfortable in Vancouver that it has diminished the emotional side of his game.
He needs that side to be effective.
It's a shitty thing to say about a guy but I just can't come to any other conclusion.
It's not that he would be the first to have this problem.
You get a glimpse of what he might still be capable of when he's playing on a National team.
Probably would come out in meaningful playoff games too.

Edler is a bit of an enigma. He has all the skills you eant in a d-man. His physical game is great, and he can be used both on the power play and in box play. Yet he keeps making the wrong decisions at times. You would think that with experience those boneheaded plays would grow away, but no.
It's actually the same on the national team. His physical play wows you, he makes some great passes, and then suddenly he gives away the puck at a critical moment, causing a scoring opportunity for the opponents.
He has great upside, but he can't really be trusted.
Guess the key is to pair him with a reliable stay-at-home d-men who can cover for him when he messes up.
At this point in time I think his greatest use for the Canucks could be to use him in a trade. I'm sure there are many teams that would like to add him to their roster. But if there aren't any good offers, he is still one of the best, if not the best, blueliners we have, so if all we get back is a bag of pucks, we keep him.

Hold onto him until his value is nearly nothing, then trade him for nearly nothing. Blame the NTC.

Ask Vegas for a second round pick for 'future considerations'
(Then in the future) Expose Edler in the expansion draft.

The genius of Benning - getting rid of that god awful Garisson NTC contract (a Gillis favourite of mine) which is now causing great grief for Stevie Y and crew, but geniusness may not be enough to get rid of Gillis final shite NTC contract - Edlers. Edler loves Vancouver, it's his home, just built his home in Point Grey, wife is from here, she's best buds with Lindens wife.
Good luck getting Edler to waive. INbred is right - blame the NTC, blame Gillis

Eriksson and Sutter contract vs Edler and Garrison contracts.Blob Mckenzie wrote:Edler contract >>>>>>>Sutter, Eriksson, Dorset, Sbisa contracts
In the last two years of Eriksson and Sutters contracts they become modified whereby they have to provide a 15 team trade list.
That numbskull Gillis and his dufus - Gilman gave both Garrison and Edler full NTC's to the very end of their stupid contracts. Shame
No worries Blob, it's the final year coming up for Sbisas no NTC contract. Placeholder like Dorsett

Some say, including self proclaimed TV & radio experts, that an organization may develop a bad reputation by doing things like asking players if they would waive an existing clause on a contract.micky107 wrote:Edler seems to have become so comfortable in Vancouver that it has diminished the emotional side of his game.

Done poorly or maliciously, I would agree, however;
It could be done for psychological effect, in other words, a tool.
There could be the odd situation where just asking could have the desired effect;
Player thinks to himself; Ah, shit! I better get my act together and come to the rink with more conviction, like I use to.
If it works, you wont get a bad reputation, you'll be seen as a genius...

Re: What should Benning do with Edler?
No reason to trade Edler for more picks in this draft, cause it sucks.
Keep him and see how he does with Green.
He might have a better season with the new coach.
If the Canucks miss the playoffs again, they can explore trading him when the market is best at the trade deadline. Getting more picks for next year's draft or the one after that plus prospects would be good.
Edler is a decent player to have until Groot returns or Juolevi proves he is ready to be a top pairing defenseman.
Edler can elevate his game higher than most of the othe defensemen, he just doesn't do that consistently.

Re: What should Benning do with Edler?
Edler is still a solid player and has a pretty decent contract. He would fetch a decent return on a trade. It'd be great to see Edler get dealt and you could keep Tanev for a while longer.
What's the market and return for Edler? Who knows. I'd want some high end prospects in return that're nearly ready for the NHL. There will be a large hole to fill next year up front so it's time for Benning to make some moves. The draft alone won't let us compete in this division, let alone this league.

Yup like a Keenan->Linden trade, get a couple young guys & a 3rd that would be beneficial to the Canucks rebuild.Iceman2014 wrote:Edler is still a solid player and has a pretty decent contract. Have to get a young LD though that can play now in a Edler deal.
But for a Tanev deal you can deal him and not need a dman in return as we got Stecher, Gudbranson on the right who can play top 4 right for now, as we are in a rebuild.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
