I tend to think that given JB's potential drafting success, Blob is correct. Pretty sure JB could have drafted players much better than the reclamation players he acquired.

But perhaps you are correct, perhaps JB's drafting isn't nearly as good as we think it is and perhaps said players will turn out to be of more value than picks would have. We should have a pretty good indication in the next few years though - to see how his picks, particularly later round picks, turn out.

The thing is, guys like the six slugs they pissed valuable assets away for are available every year July 1 or on waivers. Keep the picks for fuck sakes.

IGC can’t see the forest for the trees. Too impatient to wait for picks to develop.

IGC can’t handle a rebuild

Well that was evil....

On a lighter note, I must have hit a nerve when I said Blob "Doesn't Watch Games" Mckenzie can't handle a rebuild. :mex:

Not really..., I haven’t watched Megna and Chaput and Motte with baited breath like yourself.

I’m a fan of young kids with potential and a future.

I won’t waste my time watching after game 50 when the team refuses to play kids and trots out a pack of worthless veterans.

The events of the past few weeks may have been enough for us to make some inferences about the Canucks ownership/management group's team-building strategy in the post-Sedin era.

There are two categories of abilities that teams need to succeed in the NHL: A) skill/speed and B) size/grit/toughness. Some players combine substantive amounts of elements of both categories, but these are relatively rare, highly valued, and available only at a premium. (Gordie Howe)

There are three ways to get players: draft, trade, and free-agency. All players command a premium in free-agency, but size/grit/toughness costs less than skill/speed. Thus a 25% over-payment for Antoine Roussel will cost a smaller absolute number of cap dollars than a 25% over-payment for Loui Eriksson.

Therefore, the new strategy is to draft exclusively for skill/speed, and then hire size/grit/toughness.

It's a small sample-size, and could have been just a fluke of who was available when the Canucks numbers came up at the 2018 draft, and who was available and affordable in 2018 free-agency, but it will be interesting to see if the pattern repeats next year.

I don’t think it’s a strategy they considered. BPA in the draft were small, and the team was pushed around last year. When you look at the roster it is apparent the team needs grit. Teams use free agency and trades to upgrade and to fill holes, but draft for BPA. If Dorsett hadn’t been injured and Archibald had been more effective they may not have signed the players they did today.

Or Gaunce and Dowd have a little bit more bite to their games.

Baertschi Horvat Boeser
Eriksson Sutter Granlund
Gagner Beagle Lipstick
Roussel Kero Motte
Goldobin Petterson Dahlen
Gaudette Gaunce Virtanen

May as well re up Dowd and Archibald as well.

Edler Tanev
Hutton Gudbranson
Pouliott Biega
Hutton Stecher
Juolevi Hughes

Markstrom
Nilsson
Demko

LOL what a mess
I’ll try to clear up the mess. I’ll bold the players that are on a short leash and likely to be traded or waived. You put some of the best prospects too low, and some of the worst too high. From Benning’s comments yesterday. It sounds like Gaudette and Pettersson are both at least penciled in the line-up as scoring forwards, and he wants to sign Hughes. While those things could change, I think the starting line-up October 3rd is more likely something like this:

Baertschi Horvat Boeser
Eriksson Gaudette Pettersson
Roussel Sutter Virtanen
Schaller Beagle Granlund
Gagner

With Gaunce, Archibald, Goldobin, Motte and Leipsic trying to take one of Granlund or Gagner’s jobs. But it won’t really matter because in the long run one will go to Dahlen and the other to Lind, Jasek or Gadjovick.

Tanev Hughes
Gudbranson Edler
Stecher De Zotto
Pouliot Hutton

With Juolevi and Sautner getting some call up time during the season.

Markstrom
Demko

I think Green has seen enough and wants to move on from Nilsson.

I agree with Cherry Picker here. Only thought is if Dahlen, Lind, Jasek or Gadjovick prove good enough to stay, we may see Erickson bounced to 3rd line (barring injuries of course)

I'm not sold on Gaudette being gifted a role. He was fine during his late-season call-up, but Brock Boeser he was not.

Seeing that EP is about 135 pounds, I expect they'll want to shelter his minutes and give him veteran support. I think you're more likely to see him play with Sutter. I could see Gaudette (if he makes the team) rotating in and out with Gagner.

Bart-Bo-Flow
Eriksson-Sutter-EP
Roussel-Beagle-Virtanen (that line won't be fun to play against)
Granlund-Schaller-Gagner/Gaudette (a pile of centres, not a faceoff man amongst them)
Tanev Hughes
Gudbranson Edler
Stecher De Zotto
Pouliot Hutton
If Hughes does sign, I think he gets a good chunk of PP time, but can you really see him being on the top-pairing? That seems very Oilers-esque to me.

2:45 mark

Benning sees Gaudette and Pettersson as scorers. That doesn’t ring as 4th liners to me.

I agree that Hughes would be used more in offensive situations. But because of the lack of offence from the D, I think he’ll get whatever ice time he can handle.

Who has Pettersson on the 4th line?

Horvat started as a 4th liner. I think they'd be fine brining Gaudette along slowly.
