My apologies, Royal Dude, apparently an appetite for discussion of the Gillis regime persists on this board.

The damage Gillis wreaked upon this organization will be felt for many a generations beyond ours, your children and your childrens children. The man should be lynched right in front of the University of Victoria for the absolute atrocious mess he made of this once storied franchise.

It ain't just the Vey trade. It's the two other 2nds tossed in as sweeteners for overpaid average labour and a 3rd pissed away for Pedan. This doesn't even cover the two massive draft floor blunders with top 6 picks. I love how a 50th overall pick is a crapshoot but a 4th line pick like Vey is a fucking world beater.

See you guys at the draft. I'm getting tired bootfucking retards around

Yeah. There is just no way to characterize Virtanen as brilliant or even logical, when Nylander was on the board. Resigning Sbisa and Dorset, again neither brilliant nor logical.

Jim has had three years. The team has got worse every year. The clock is ticking. Are they 18 months from starting a season where they qualify for then playoffs? I hope so. If not, bye bye Genius GM.

Linden Vey, Virtanen.

Well, well, well.......let's take a look at Gillis drafting again shall we?

RoyalDude wrote:Would Roberto Macenzzi's boi - Gillis still have his job had he drafted these players instead?

2008 Draft- Norris Trophy D-man - Erik Karlsson (15th) instead of "where is he now" - Centre Hodgson at 10th.

2009 Draft - Centre Marcus Johansson (24th) instead of "where is he now" shrimp of a centre - Schroeder at 22nd?

2010 Draft - Centre's - Kuznetsov (26th), Coyle (28th) or Brock Nelson at 30th instead of trading the 25th pick for the greatest D-man in Canuck history - "where is he now" Buyout Ballard.

2011 Draft - Centre - Rackell 30th instead of the great - Niklas Jensen at 29th?

2012 Draft - D-man Brady Skjel (28th) instead of Gaunce at 26th. Hate to pick on Gaunce but the kid is borderline NHL/AHL, His ceiling is very limited. Tanner Pearson at 30th would have been nice as well.

2013 Draft - D-man - Shea Theodore at 26th instead of that bum Shrinkcarrot at 24th? Theodore is a beaut! Yeah, Gillis drafted Horvat at 10th, but in this draft, one of the strongest in years, you'd have to be a moron of GM to not land a good player

Gillis poor drafting ruined him and this team as we are witnessing now.

That Ballard trade was the worst move, then a year later we lost Ehrhoff and his puck-moving and power-play ability, plus he was a really was a good engine for the transition game with the twins where they had their best season's in their NHL career with Hoffer.

& this current team could really use Kuznetsov (which could have been nabbed at 25, but the Gillis era didn't draft Russians by policy), this team would be flying if we had Horvat #1C & Kuzentsov #2C....the ol' Redwings model Big Canadian heart center and a high flying Russian #2 center.

With the 26th overall pick, the Capitals got Evgeny Kuznetsov, one of the breakout stars of the World Junior championship. Kuznetsov had four goals and seven assists to lead Russia to the gold medal at the WJC.
Maybe the Canucks missed opportunity there.

That Ballard deal also got the Canucks zero picks in the 1st three rounds that draft.

Gillis assertion moving that 1st+ was
It's a weak draft, and the Canucks' prospect pool is strong enough that he's comfortable being the first GM in Canucks' history to wait to draft anybody until round four. He was so cool with it that he drafted Patrick McNally in the fourth-round, a high-school student who's planning to go to Harvard after his senior year next year.

Lol. Questioning Benning is not the same as saying Gillis was dope. Both had warts. Both did good stuff. The difference is...one guy might resign Miller. And, also Gudbranson might get $5 million. Whereas Gillis is looong gone.

Its unfortunate that he only got Kassian in return though. But I'd love to have seen that kind of synergy between Benning and Desjardins to maximize value for assets, especially in a year like this where the team is a seller.

A 10th overall draft pick that was wasted on a coke head party animal playing the AHL. That's a favourite of yours?

Long gone yet this team is still feeling the aftershocks of his mishandling of the team, with nothing to show for it, just one Cup run and done... Well managed teams can at least make it back it to the big show after awhile, but the Canucks didn't have any young guys to replace the stale old team.

Sounds like Miller is going to July 1st. Dunno what Guds will get, JB trying to sign him one year to see if he's worth term/cash.

For the rebuild you definitely want JB for this, even the most pessimistic fans have at least admitted he's better at scouting, besides Virtanen (even though there's still hope for the 20 year old).

It would seem the net effect of this conversation has been the discovery that your definition of a "logical" move by a GM is "one for which a passionate apologist could articulate a reason". That is a standard that any move by any GM could meet, so in that case, you have done nothing to distinguish Benning's alleged genius from Milbury's folly.

Ahhh but this conversation was never about yours truly attempting to prove Benning's genius!

This conversation was about you trying to prove he's not a genius.

You failed miserably and now you are "demanding negative proof" (classic denial).

First you ignore my parenthetical qualifiers (in an effort to misrepresent me) and now this. :scowl:

No one has threatened Ronning's Ghost with the boot in any way, shape, or form.

I think you know this and are just yanking chains as per usual.

However, as a moderator I am forced to set the record straight.

If anything, RG is rather high on my "Don't Ever Ban List". (even if he is a cad)

Now kindly go fuck yourself with a pointy stick Mr Mckenzie...

EDIT: Actually, forget "kindly"... go ruthlessly fuck yourself with a pointy stick!

You're the one who made the original assertion, so I would say that means you're the one who is trying to prove something. You act as though Benning's genius is a given until disproven.

I would say that at this date I lack the evidence to prove Benning is not a genius.(1) That evidence will arrive -- or not -- in 1-2 hockey seasons. On that much, we agree. As a corollary, I don't think you have the evidence to prove that Benning is a genius, either, which is why I (and apparently, some others) find it so strange that you continually assert that he is. On the other hand, "strange" is part of your board identity.

(1) At professional hockey management. I don't think anyone on this board really cares if he's great at mathematics, chess, crossword puzzles, poetry, or the like.

And, it is widely held, a ruffian.
In the Strangelove rankings, is that better or worse than being an asshole?

Ooooh, a "get out of being banned free" card. Kind of a waste, since I don't have any inclination to do anything that would normally get someone banned. Can i trade it with another poster ?

Storied franchise? We are all die hard fans here but I think it's more than wishful thinking to describe the Canucks in such terms especially in the pre-Gillis era. DISCLAIMER I'm not passing judgment on him as a GM, just merely pointing out that the Canucks greatest run of success came after 2008.

I know there isn't much to talk about but how are you guys still harping on this Benning, Gillis hate? Reading Strangelove try to justify the Linden Vey trade is comical. It was a swing and a miss by Benning. Doesn't mean he is a shitty GM. It's just one bad trade, not a disastrous one, just a bad one. Seriously, just let it go!
