Doc was right. Notwithstanding we have Markstrom to show for the trade, we could have kept Lack, we stand to be in a piss of hurt should Luongo stop playing before that deal is up.
The only way I can see Luongo sticking around until he is 43 years old is if Florida's young forwards pan out, and they can bolster their blueline slightly. His numbers last year were as good as they have ever been outside of 2010-11 with Vancouver, the team in front of him just couldn't find ways to win the close games. He was still above .500, but they managed to lose 12 games in OT or the S/O.
If the Panthers aren't in the playoffs this season, and looking like up and coming contenders over the following 2 seasons, Louie will probably pull the pin by 39. Any regression in his game will probably have the Panthers looking to move him to another team (likely one trying to get to the cap floor) as they are going to need cap space for the likes of Barkov, Huberdeau, Ekblad, and at least 2nd line money for guys like Bjugstad.
Maybe the best we can hope for is that the Panthers trade him to a bottom feeder needing to add to their cap, and he refuses to report. The team suspends him, he doesn't retire, and everyone is happy. (Or would that kind of "suspension" result in him coming off of the payroll?)
