There lies the major issue with this trade.

Garrison, Burrows and Hansen are next.

Nope, but depending on how the 24th pick turns out this could be deemed a double. At least the deal was done, and it's not a robbery. I would take this over months of ongoing Kesler saga.

At least the Canucks keep the 3rd round pick this year...

By giving up their 3rd rounder next year, in a better draft. Brilliance.

Like a 3rd year deal makes a difference this year or next? It is the same.

Cause we got a player we don't have to worry about in Bonino, this is a solid hockey trade once you think of the intangibles.

Remember with Gillis he'd decline and wait it out all summer and probably nothing would happen, hoping he can get a better deal at the deadline, making more of a mess in the process.

But now boom we are done, got young players who are ready to play and can improve, with another 1st round pick so that's three high picks in this draft.
A long time ago, a baseball player remarked: "If I owned a ballclub, I'd hire a $5,000 coach and a $15,000 scout."

Well, I assume that MGJB is expecting the Canucks to be in a playoffs team this year. The position of the 3rd round pick will be significant lower than this year.

+1

How many drafts are of such abundance of talent that extend all the way to the 3rd round???

After the 2nd round, it's pretty much a crap shoot unless you have some very astute scouts whispering in your ear.

I'm happy with the return, but I also see a bit of "addition-by-subtraction" in getting Kesler out.

Great player, but just such an asshole. This year in particular he seemed to be disconnected from the team on and off the ice, so much of his offence was generated in solo efforts - no passing, no working with linemates.

If you want to change a culture, he is the guy that had to get moved.

I can't be bothered substantiating it with a quote but I have read people saying pretty much verbatim that the 2015 draft is thought to have very promising prospects into the third round.

If it's true (I don't think you can make blanket statements about players who just finished their 16 year old seasons) then dropping fifteen or twenty spots in the third round would very well put us in a position where the last of the promising players is off the board..

Because (as has been pointed out) that Kesler's list of teams he was willing to be traded to was basically 2 teams thus hamstringing any leverage Benning might have had.

Pretty simple really. It's why I'm not super disappointed. There's still the opportunity to move up to get Reinhart AND have a first round pick @ 24 AND two serviceable players. Not bad really.

After listening to some radio chatter and call-ins, and getting over the fact that we didn't get the 10th, this is actually not too bad.

We do overrate Kesler a bit, if this was 2011 then we just got shafted, but now? I'm not sure. This hinges on how Sbisa turns things around here.

Some retard call-in on the TEAM just compared Marty St. Louis to Kesler. A 1ppg top-3 winger, to a 2nd line center. LMAO!!!
