The Vancouver Canucks announced today that Trevor Linden has been named President, Hockey Operations and Alternate Governor, NHL. Linden returns to lead the team that he played on for 16 seasons, including seven as team captain.

In his role, Linden will be responsible for all hockey operations, including the coaching and scouting staffs, player procurement and development, and minor league affiliations and operations.

I like this. As long as they bring in the right GM, that is. Good branding!! Linden jerseys can go on sale again.

And Linden never lied to the press. He said he had not been approached by the Canucks for the GM job. Good hide their Trevor.

I wish Trevor the best of luck and I am one fan who's excitement for the team has returned. I hope he has as much autonomy as he needs but I sense he will be fine with a team approach. I like that he will be the face of the organization.

Someone on TSN posted this - it makes sense to me:

Some guy on TSN wrote:The President of a team sets the vision and focus of the organization, he then HIRES hockey people to RUN the team. Yes its a PR move, No Linden doesn't have NHL team front office experience, but he DOES have business leadership experience. He will be there to put forth the VISION and keep the GM, coaches management on the same page moving forward. That will be his role.

True dat.

Linden seems like he'd be a good guy to work for.

Fingers crossed that Nicholson or somebody with big league experience is hired as GM.

All nice and everything but depending on who the GM is and what they do in the off season this will have zero affect on the on ice product.

This is Aquaman's in the back ground just trying to make good vibes for the team and sell more season tickets or keep the ones they have coming back.

I don't see this as an amazing move. But, it could be a good move.

Brining in TL is low risk in terms of PR, and EXTREMELY high risk in terms of hockey ops.

TL has no track record. One hopes that he brings in someone whose done the job before that can help.

The term "complete autonomy" was used as well.

Maybe this is the spaghetti boys' way of trying to dispel the appearance that they have they're meddling owners up to their armpits in the team's hockey affairs. If Trev truly has an effectively free hand in running the hockey ops and choosing the GM and other hockey staff, then this bodes well for the franchise. I think he still has street cred in the league and in hockey circles from his PA involvement and such.

Now it's a matter of what Trev does next. Torts had better do some fine convincing... ;)

Yep..... Yawn.

Let's sell some tickets while we can and get the renewals today. Why else have this press conference before the season is over?

Are they meddling owners, or does GMMG like to start rumors about them being meddling owners in order to deflect responsibility for his own actions?

Sounds like the guy has a vision of what the management team will look like, he mentioned Pat Quinn and the Steamer as mentors, he mentioned speaking to Sakic, Yzerman and Cam Neely about taking the role and what it means as a former player. He talked about traditional, fast, hard hitting, sound defensive positional play as basis for winning hockey (thank God.)

Call me crazy but, I think from now on it's Trevor "Moses" Linden
