And So The Axe Falls

Re: And So The Axe Falls
I go back to the cup run of 2011 and hearing of all the "arrogance" that the Canucks had I wonder if it was actually Gillis that portrayed that arrogance more so than the players ? Looking at the team now we lack guys like Torres and Lapierre. Sure they are aholes but look at Boston which is a team full of aholes. Same with Chicago especially when they won their first cup.
It doesnt take a genius to look around the league at all the stories coming from other gm's about dealing with Gillis and realize he had some issues dealing with his peers. Some people downplayed them and said it was because Nonis' cousin is a TSN "insider" but as usual where there is smoke there is fire.

I never thought GMMG was arrogant. I thought he was open and forthcoming. I also do not believe the fan base and press needs to know every detail of the organization just as I do not need to know every detail of Central City Brewing to be a fan of theirs.
He spoke corporate speak. He talked in general terms and laid out broad guidelines. Some folks took them as hard and fast rules and ironclad plans so when exceptions occurred they had a hard time fathoming it. I deal with folks who speak that way all the time, unless you are on the inside to see the warts, the corporate line is clear and smooth sailing.

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

He was arrogant alright. Just did a small job for a homeowner in Shaunessay who knows Gillis and the Aqualinis, says he's extremely arrogant. He says what you see on tv is what you get from Gillis in person, very unfriendly to the point of being really uncomfortable in his company.Topper wrote:I never thought GMMG was arrogant. To be honest, I got a kick out of Michael D. Gillis. In fact, he's exactly the type of personality I can appreciate. (I love me some me.)BEST REALITY
It’s been open season on Gillis since he was axed, and a lot of those criticisms will dull over time.
He didn’t do himself any favours with an act that often made him appear like he was riding a high horse. But, to be honest, when he was with the media he generally was the smartest guy in the room.
I do think some of his routine was misunderstood, including those digs at The Moj which will never be forgotten.
That was one of the few times Gilly was letting his freak flag fly. He was trying to be jocular and loose. It was part of his regular routine off air. He’d make fun of my jeans and shoes and I’d make fun of his facial hair or the lack of sleep. His delivery may have come across as mean spirited, but he didn’t intend it that way.
If you can back it up, you can be as arrogant as you want.

Cool stuff right there. I mean if you have poster Betamax and a runt cub reporter like Jason Botchford in your corner life can't be all bad. The digs at Marjanovich were some of the best radio in years around here. So now the Moj grows some balls after Gillis has been fired and trashes him or air.
Re: And So The Axe Falls
Well, at least the Moj "trashes" Michael D. Gillis under his regular "handle." Can't say the same with everybody here, EH?Thomas Khunthair wrote:Cool stuff right there. FYI, The book has seemingly found a new publisher and new title ...... for obvious reasons.Betamax wrote:IMO, the media member that's probably most upset about the "Axe" falling on GMMG is Bruce Dowbiggin. The Vancouver Canucks Pursuit of Hockey Excellence
Written by Bruce Dowbiggin
Needless to say, Dowbiggin was not impressed with what happened to GMMG, especially with the timing of book's future release.Synopsis
With unprecedented access to the Vancouver Canuck's General Manager, Mike Gillis, best-selling sports writer Bruce Dowbiggin provides a thorough investigation into one of hockey's most unique organizations.
Entering the league as part of the NHL's 1970 expansion, the Canucks have steadily built their organization into one of the best teams to play for in professional hockey. The ownership and the talented general manager, Mike Gillis, set out to develop an exciting, player-first franchise, in the process allowing Gillis to acquire top-tier talent at less than market value--all because the athletes were so eager to play for Vancouver. Further improvements, such as a state-of-the-art dressing room, personal nutritionists, skills experts, sleep specialists and a world-class medical team, have meant that the Canucks have the best team in the league, both on- and off-ice. And the club's new mandate has resulted in incredible success on the ice. Leading up to the 2013 playoffs, the Canucks played with focus and consistency, and they looked like they would again be a contender.... Shockingly, they were ousted after a first round ousting in four straight games.
Once the most disciplined team in the NHL, the Canucks 2014 season has seen them become the most penalized team in the league--playing a much more physical game as they have struggled to win. Best Practices not only shares with fans how the Canucks climbed their way to the top of the NHL, but also how they have addressed their drastic change in situation.
Best Practices shares an exciting narrative that includes detailed personal interviews with Mike Gillis and offers all fans of the game a behind-the-curtain look at the business of sport, the strategy of sport and the constant changes that professional sports clubs face.
The hockey world has followed the same path for decades -- but when those strategies continue to generate the same results, it is time to think differently. The rules haven't changed and the governance is the same, but how Canucks General Manager, Mike Gillis, has worked differently within the system is the truly unique story of the Vancouver Canucks.

The Rise and Fall of the Greatest Vancouver Canucks Team Ever
by Bruce Dowbiggin
CDN $21.95 (PBK)
Forthcoming Title
An incendiary inside look at the Canucks' meteoric rise to the top of the NHL and their dramatic post-riot fall to mediocrity—all at a time when new efforts are being launched to save the once-great team.
In 2008, the Vancouver Canucks were Team Modern, revolutionizing the NHL under their new GM, former player agent Mike Gillis. Cool, calculating, and unsparing with the media, the onetime number one draft pick of the old Colorado Rockies swept away the tangled psychological past of the Canucks with bold innovation, remodeling Vancouver as a destination city for NHL star players. To do so, he built the Canucks from a non-playoff team in 2008 to the best in hockey from 2010-2012. He modernized the players' diets and psychological approach, he rebuilt the dressing room, and he sought sleep consultants to help with the Canucks' punishing travel schedule. More than that, his winning team lifted Vancouver from eighth overall in NHL revenues to second by 2013. When the team took to the ice for Game 7 of the 2011 Cup Final, it seemed there was nothing the Canucks couldn't overcome with their "Canucktivity" approach. The hockey world was at their feet.
But things changed in Game 7. Physically exhausted and bullied by the Bruins, the Canucks succumbed 4-0. To cap the greatest season in team history, Vancouver rioted. Gillis tried a number of aggressive moves to get back to the Final, from switching Luongo for Schneider to trading players, but nothing worked. From there, the dominoes fell: Alain Vigneault was dismissed, John Tortorella hired; Tortorella raged, fans bayed for Gillis' head; and finally, Gillis and Tortorella were both fired. In spring 2014, tried-and-true Canuck hero Trevor Linden was installed as president, with former teammate Jim Benning by his side as GM. No one was quite sure if this was an improvement, but at least the hysterical screaming had stopped.
How did it happen? Ice Storm follows the journey that led the Canucks from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the abyss in six short years.
