George Richards@GeorgeRichards:
Luongo and Steve Anthony to Panthers for Markstrom, Mathias and the Canucks retain 15% of Luongo's salary

Re: Luongo to Panthers for Markstron and Mattias
At first blush, this is not a bad trade – a “hockey trade” as some like to call it. This looks much better than the 2nd rounder Nonis tried to rape Gillis for a year ago. Of course we all would have liked more in terms of a Bjugstad or whatever, but the market for Luongo sucked.
Markstrom is a highly touted young goalie. He always seemed to be regarded I don’t know much else other than that.
Markstrom, Lack and Eriksson…damn, odds are one of them HAS to work out, right?
Matthias is a good, big young center. Locking up that third line center position for the next 5 or 6 years is nothing to sneeze at.
Saw some media hack complaining that Matthias’ highest goal total is only 14 goals…yeah 14 goals over only 48 games last year. LOL.
One thing is for sure, we got a hell of a lot younger with this trade.
Luongo says he is going “home”. Good for him. Best goaltender in Canucks history, but he really epitomized this era of Canucks hockey - excellent at times, horrible at times, and overall not quite good enough.

Lol, sure. Nothing happened before Sunday. It's all because he didn't get to play in BC Place.

Maybe it was the Olympic snub.dhabums wrote:black ace wrote:McKenzie and others reporting this trade happened because of the snub and was not in place beforehand.

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Probably, that's why we sent to him Florida to troll Yzerman.
Hopefully the Panthers get relocated to Seattle.

I love every move Jim Benning makes

I think all things considered, this was a decent return.
Still, I don't know about the rest of you but I'm suddenly feeling the sting of game 7 for the first time in awhile. I mean the fact that we didn't win with this guy. I remember all the hope and promise of 2006 when the trade was made. We were getting the best goalie of his generation. The one guy who could have put us over the top in 2002-2003... and alas it wasn't meant to be. We didn't have the next Patrick Roy but instead the next Cujo. We managed to botch one of the most dominant seasons of any team in the modern era... *sigh* such is the fate of the Canucks!
All nostalgia aside, I think this is good for the team and I hope it's the sign of some bigger deals to come. The real key will be if Gillis can get proper value for Kesler (and Edler). It's a time of great opportunity. Let's see how it unfolds.

But it does make the Schneider deal look a little worse now.
I know this is a year later and the 2 are not related but dang it would feel better to have Schneider at the moment.

Re: Luongo to Panthers for Markstron and Mattias
this is decent return, but really, it's something Fla could be talked into now, but not in June? Shit, if we got just Markstrom back in June that would have been fine (Matthias I don't see being much, but whatever, maybe), but shit, in one year from two top goalies to now Lack, who I like a lot, but he's a cold stone rook!
I mean if he had traded Luongo for a 2nd round pick because he just had to dump him that's one thing, but he got some value, and I just can't imagine some sort of offer could not have been worked out in June so that we could have kept Schneider.
I'm happy for Luongo, guy has been real good about all this and for all his flaw brought this team to elite status and one game from the cup, nothing but the best for him.

I dont mind the return. Markstrom I dont think is the prospect he once was but maybe Melanson can straighten him up a bit. Also wouldnt be suprised to see the Cancks pick up another goalie tomorrow. Maybe Reimer ??? I dont like the depth in goal right now. Would have obviously been better if Schneider was still here and Lack was the back-up.
The real pain here will be the cap penalty when Luo retires.

James Mirtle @myrtle:
cap penalties from Roberto Luongo's contract for the Canucks if he retires early.
