I'm pretty sure the Canucks would let Tanev go for that type of return. On top of that, when guys like Pietrangelo and Subban don't get offer-sheeted, the chances of Tanev getting one are slim. GM's don't usually piss in eachothers cornflakes for fun, and Tanev is not an impact player.

Furthermore, there are far better RFA d-men to go after this summer: Justin Schutlz, Gudbranson, Subban, Franson, Krug etc. etc.

I think giving him a $1M raise should be plenty fair for Tanev. Especially considering PK Subban signed an RFA (bridge) deal for $2.85M after seasons of 38 and 34 points (and 21 goals combined).
Oh.....excellent examples in Pietrangelo and Subban. Subban ended up getting lowballed by the Habs (who are going to pay for it now), and there were also big question marks regarding his attitude and consistency. It wasn't until after he signed his deal that he won the Norris, and I don't think anyone expected PK to sign for so little. Pietrangelo received a fat $6.5M per year.....in an off-season where EVERYONE knew that the cap was dropping. Nobody could afford to offer sheet either of those two guys.

You listed 5 guys, some of them will get re-signed by their current clubs before they hit the market. There are 30 teams too, in case you forgot......so 25 others might be in the hunt for a young defenseman. I would also venture to say that very few teams have as little wiggle room as Gillis does thanks to NTC's and aging talent.

Where does Tanev fit on this list:

Kesler
Vanek
Penner
Backes
Bernier
Hjarlmarsson
Weber
O'Rielly

These are the only players that have signed offer sheets since the 2004 lockout. Only Penner swapped teams, and Bernier was an obvious reprisal for the Backes attempt. Maybe Hjarlmarsson is close? But he was a top-4 guy on a cup-winning team, and the Hawks actually were fucked against the cap. I would not be worried about Tanev getting an offer sheet.

Man, the Canucks really should have let Bernier go in hindsight eh?
Would have served St. Louis right...but then we'd never have gotten Oreskovich. :o

We cant afford to have Tanev at 3 mill plus unless we move one of our other defencemen. You need at least 2 of your top 6 to be under 2 mill. its the same problem we ran into in the past with Ballard as a bottom pairing guy. You need value. Thats why Stanton has been such a nice find this year. Basically replaced Ballard and saved 4 mill.
