Yakupov - 5 goals, 7 assists, Minus 25. Ouch

You know, I didn't expect the Oilers to be contenders or anything, but they are currently on pace for only 55 points this season, which is just atrocious. Even in the last several horrible years they still managed point totals in the 60's and 70's.
Does Eakins last the season? How long until Katz says enough is enough and fires the whole management team?

Yeah for a guy who claimed to be impatient, claimed to want to win now and claimed his only goaltender under contract had not solidified the #1 spot Craig MacTavish sure had an odd offseason.
Made one good trade in Paajarvi for Perron but other than that he signed a goaltender who would in no way present a challenge to non-#1 Dubnyk, cut some dead weight in Horcoff and then signed Gordon who is scarcely an improvement, brought in Ference who has a ring (so Kevin Lowe knows that he knows how to win) but isn't a leaps and bounds improvement over anyone they have, then waited until the team had basically pissed away their season to trade Smid for no immediate improvement (and cap space they don't need) and sign Bryzgalov.
Didn't find a deal to help his club using his first rounder, didn't trade any of his plethora of undersized skill guys for any kind of return that might help them win games in the West.. I just.. I don't get it. Oilers plans had better hope he has a five year plan or something along those lines..

Even worse for Oilers fans is that the values of their two most tradeable assets (Hemsky and Yakupov) have done nothing but decrease. Whey they have continually refused to trade Hemsky for a two-way centre is well beyond me. They probably could have gotten more for Gagner and Eberle in the off season than then could today as well. There upcoming draft picks won’t be nearly as valuable as their 2012 or 2013 picks were.
It really is a complete disaster.

Eberle is pretty much untradeable now with that contract. He definitely has the skill but he needs the room and perimeter to make that happen. Play him hard and he's pretty much useless. He would be great on a good team but he is not a player to be relied upon to lead the way to wins. Completely useless defensively. That's a bad contract.herb wrote:Even worse for Oilers fans is that the values of their two most tradeable assets (Hemsky and Yakupov) have done nothing but decrease. I'd keep Hall and RNH and get rid of everyone else, if that is possible. Too many of the same type of players, too weak and small in their top 9. Defense is a joke, Schultz is overrated, he's as bad as Yak and Eberle defensively. Pretty much a PP specialist and that is it.

Re: OOTS: 2013-14
If they had made a decent offer for Schneider they'd have had their goalie. Instead they, like every other GM, tried to hold MG over the barrel. To send Schneider to a divisional opponent it would have taken overpaying but they have the assets to do so. Then they could have focused on bringing in stronger defence. Now it looks like a house of cards about to crumble. While Schneider fits in to their core age they could have made a deal for Luongo on the cheap (comparably) and it would have at least made them playoff contenders.

Yeah, the Oilers have a bevy of similar forwards and not enough two-way grit up front. Their centre ice depth and defense are awful.
The fact the Oilers goaltending and defense is awful again this year is the least surprising thing of 2013. Yet Oilers management continues to sit there and do nothing like this is an impossible situation.
They also should have been doing all they could to land Schneider/Luongo/Bernier. Instead they stuck with Dubnyk of all people. I suspect Lowe’s ego got in the way (you know, he does know a little about winning, if there’s ever a concern).

Disagree. Luongo would not make that team a playoff contender. No goaltender would.ClamRussel wrote:...Luongo on the cheap (comparably) and it would have at least made them playoff contenders.
They have one defenseman who is a legitimate NHL top 3 guy, Ference, and he's only a #3, Ference is not a top pairing option on most other teams in the league. I think that Petry and Nick Shultz are serviceable #4's. The rest are kids that need mentoring to develop, and that is something that the Oilers have simply not provided.
I'll even sidetrack here to say that I think that might be one of Edler's problems in Vancouver. His best season came while he was playing with Ehrhoff, who was already an established puck moving guy, and I wouldn't be surprised if Edler was keying off of him as a mentor in some respects, since Hoff's departure the Canucks haven't had a legitimate puck rushing defenseman and Edler has been expected to fill that role. But I digress.....
The Oilers will flounder and go nowhere so long as Lowe is at the helm. MacT is probably a very good AHL or junior coach, he knows how to develop work ethic. But I don't think anyone is convinced he's a good GM or much of a judge of what it takes to build a balanced team. Perron for Pajarrvi was a no-brainer. But a big move hasn't happened because MacT, and probably Lowe to, is afraid to pull the trigger and have it backfire.

Re: OOTS: 2013-14
The forward grouping is as much to blame for the Oilers shite play as their Defense and goaltending. The play away from the puck, defense, back checking, smart decisions, puck containment etc., from the Oil forwards is atrocious. It's a bigger problem than just their defense and goaltending. Their star forwards are awful at defense and own zone coverage.
Their management should not be rewarded with another top pick. Should be a law against it.

Extremely impressive feat when you consider the era that he did it in.Cornuck wrote:OV - 6th faster to 400 goals.
The only guys ranked ahead of him (I.e. Got to 400 faster) were past stars that peaked in the 80's/early 90's.

If I was the Oilers, I would trade every single future first round pick for organizational depth.RoyalDude wrote:The forward grouping is as much to blame for the Oilers shite play as their Defense and goaltending. Oilers are in dire need veteran leadership and depth (especially on D).
They have solid core pieces. They just need substance.

Neither CS nor Luongo would really be helping the Oilers right now. Either would certainly give them respectable goaltending but they need an entire character overhaul. They have a culture of losing and a bunch of players who were gods in junior but don't know how to play a team game.
The only HW the Canucks need
Re: OOTS: 2013-14
Exactly this. This is why a player like Yakupov is having such a hard time. The leaders on the Coilers are not leaders. They are punk kids that have created cliques and are seriously lacking in moral fiber. There is no Jonathan Toews on this team. Just a bunch of Patrick Kanes with nobody to hold them accountable.Hockey Widow wrote:Neither CS nor Luongo would really be helping the Oilers right now. Kane is playing some phenomenal hockey right now and is also one of the best hockey players in the world. However, the Hawks would be no where without captain serious.

Pretty freakin awesome if you ask me.
